How come . . . . .

Yesterday I saw a "School Bus Driver" wearing a shoulder harness "seat Belt" in the Bus. How come the kidlets riding in that same bus don't get to wear seatbelts?? :-2

Hi Cars,

It's a state law in Noo Joisey for our kidlets to wear seat belts on the school bus. Unfortunately, the belts just go around the waist and not the shoulders.

Our bus drivers check to make sure that all the kidlets have their belts on before they start the bus.

Just looked up this link now about other states......Not all states require seat belts on school buses, and I believe that all busses should have the security of seat belts with the shoulder sash.

In the UK, although as yet it is not compulsory to fit seat belts for passengers, bus companies are fitting them. Where fitted, the driver must inform those passengers that they are legally required to wear them. It would seem that most bus companies in the UK are now fitting seat belts as an improved safety feature which gives confidence to any member of public who wishes to travel by bus - I expect the bus companies can see that this is a good selling point. I expect that USA have a similar situation, where fitting passenger seat belts is, at present, done on a voluntary basis.

This refers to UK buses:-

In buses and coaches (including minibuses), seated passengers aged 14 years and above will have to use seat belts where they are fitted. Regulations requiring children 3 years to 13 years to use seat belts (or child restraints if they are available) in these vehicles will be brought forward as soon as practicable. The regulations will not include any obligation for anyone to provide child restraints in these vehicles. Bus and coach (including minibus) operators need to notify their passengers that seat belt wearing is compulsory, where they are fitted. Click the link for further information.

It is up to each state.

New York, New Jersey, Florida, California and Texas have laws requiring school buses be equipped with seat belts, said Mike Martin, executive director of the National Association for Pupil Transportation.

It costs between $7,000 and $17,000 per bus to upgrade to seats with lap-shoulder belts, officials said. And new, large school buses typically cost between $85,000 and $100,000.

The Connecticut Assembly is convening for a rare Saturday session today, May 1, 2010.

Among other items on the agenda for the Senate is a bill to encourage school districts to equip their school buses with seat belts. A version of this legislation passed in the House yesterday by a vote of 125-18.

Author of the bill, Representative Antonio Guerra (D-Rocky Hill), had initially called for seat belts to be mandatory on all buses by 2011.

The Transportation Committee, which is co-chaired by Guerra, modified the original legislation. The version passed by the committee called for seat belts to be on all buses purchased after 2012.
