Actually, Just a Suggestion

Post by Accountable »

I've discovered on another forum with the same software that we could have the capability to give each other "reputation" points. I've found that it's a really easy & convenient way to let a poster know that I agree with them but don't really have anything to add to the thread. Rep points that others give to me are listed in the My Settings area & I can look at them at any time & smile about a particularly interesting rant I had or click the link to review a thread.

It's a really useful gadget! :)

It can also lead to rep wars, rep whores and a never-ending line of squabbles but on balance I'd agree. Having been on a few forums where rep is used I've seen all its permutations and if folks are mature enough to use it properly it does enhance discussions.

Some are, some aren't. Sadly thread ratings were abused to upset people here and no doubt something like this would also be abused. Sad that the immaturity of some ruins it for others hey.

I gave a glancing comment to this three days ago at http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/probl ... ost1316239 so I'll not repeat the words. At best it's a two-edged concept though.

I can imagine what you mean, Betty. So can we somehow start to ignore the seriously immature here and work towards rebuilding FG? I know it's no easy task but it really makes me cross that a few are ruining it for the many.

We can but try hey. A lot of what is needed around here is self moderation, maybe when anyone notices things that are askew or things they take offence with they could butt in - politely! and just say, 'actually I think what you just said was unfair and uncalled for' and hash it out -politely! there in the thread. Some people are evidently unable to moderate themselves, so maybe the membership could moderate and you never know, in a poster being pulled up visibly by others it may just well make them consider their behaviour and change it.

Am I asking for the un-askable? I don't know, what I do know is the current system does not work as it ends up with divided factions within this place. I have been here since 2005, and since being a mod I have been asked several times to take sides with people, that never happened when I was just Betty Boop. I can see things to like in everybody here, no one is perfect, each member has their strengths and their weaknesses, just like me really.

I am laughing to myself at the irony of my situation today, my daughter is so me, she is stuck piggy in the middle between friends, one of whom is demanding all her attention and the others who just want to play as a group. It's hard work and I keep saying that I will never have this child over again, but then again, is that fair on that child. I have no idea why she is behaving in this way, lack of self confidence maybe but I so remember the same situation from my childhood, several of my friends would demand that I be their 'best' friend and not play with my other friends. I think my point is is that any friendship has to actually be worked at, it's quite easy to just find bad points and harp on about them instead isn't it.

The lack of maturity that ruined it for me was the mods not being mature enough to tell the whiners to stop whining and stand up for themselves. We can certainly look at any new idea and discard it using the 'once bitten, twice shy' approach, then rearrange deck chairs & talk about the good ol' days. Another option might be to realize that that little bite didn't kill us, and press on.

Rep points are private, not available for all to see. While it's safe to say that some will give them some inordinate imaginary value and find a reason to get upset about it, and others will find a way to use them to get those people upset for sport, it's also safe to say that those people will always find some way to get upset and some way to upset others for sport.

So the question becomes: Are we going to be a ForumGarden where adults gather for comaraderie, conversation, and opinion-sharing, or are we going to continue to treat it like an elementary school playground, where every skinned knee or hurt feeling is grounds to stop the world and make everyone sit quietly until we learn to play right?

I deserve a rep for that post, I think. :)

sounds cool!

two forums I'm on, you can thank members at the bottom of their post, (or thread), you still post to them, but its always nice to say thanks.

any member can view who gave them a thanks, these forums are great with awesome people who care, give advice and do not mock each other.

I began using the report post button because thats what some of you moderators encourage us to do, but then it seems all that is done is its talked about in the back room to see if there are justifiable infractable offenses. I say its better to either remove reported posts by splitting/forking or composting for extremely offensive posts, or even simply informing the person who reported the post that you disagree with the their reason for reporting. Infractions are completely unnecessary, IMO.

Or by handling it as you would irl. Would you call the police for being offended? More likely, you'd respond or walk away. Either of those would be a more adult response than bleating to the 'authorities'. *walks away*

There comes a time when you stand your ground and ask those in authority to mediate. They don't have to arrest, just mediate.

We're talking about those who ownership puts in authority, not the militia.

Ahso you need to read what ACC was referring to with the "REP" posts it has nothing to do with the "Report Post" function it is about "Reputation" points.

Once again just because everything isn't resolved to your liking doesn't mean its wrong, or wasn't handled you lack the ability to see any flexibility with any situation once you determine its against your liking. Move on Ahso the horse is dead.

If you agree people should not "whine" then don't tell them to use the report post button.

What you don't seem to understand is moderators have more options available to them other than handing out infractions to members when they take your advice.

Moderating on a forum is vital because there are many people that just do not get the boundaries of adult conversation. That doesn't necessarily mean they are immature or dumb.

I think the problem here is that the moderators don't understand boundaries either. You folks need to get a little more creative and be willing to put in the work. You all volunteered for this and perhaps you didn't evaluate what you were getting into before hand, but if one can't take the heat.........

Right. boundaries of adult conversation are all about getting the last word. Y'know, I think there's a thread on that around here somewhere.

Sorry... wrong thread...If its intentional, its immature or dumb, but its not always intentional. Case in point is what I was arguing in the Thread Control thread. Either way though a thread can be kept clean with proper creative moderating.

People who do it intentionally and have the posts moved or removed will eventually become frustrated and stop or move on, the others who simply need to learn, will.
