Soda Butte campground is a heavily populated campground in Yellowstone Park, and isn’t typically the site of bear attacks. Bears usually attack in less populated areas. But last night, a bear wandered into the Soda Butte campground, and attacked three people. One person died, and two more were injured.
Deb Freele, one of the victims, says she survived by acting dead when the bear bit her leg.
She said: “A split second before something told me something was wrong. I woke up and the bear bit down on me. I haven’t even moved. I screamed and he bit down harder. He continued to bite and shake and I could hear my bones breaking.
“I decided I was going to play dead¦. After a few seconds, he loosened his grip and he left.

Bear Attacks Near Yellowstone at Soda Butte Campground
I saw this report on the news this morning. What a nightmare for those folks! Since it was a heavily occupied campground, it's surprising more people weren't attacked.

I have camped in this camp ground all food goes in a trash can and pulled up a tree on a rope. I would never sleep in a tent in this camp grounds it has bears all around it. We put up our tent and slept in the van. YIKES..!!
ALOHA!!

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.
WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"

Bear Attacks Near Yellowstone at Soda Butte Campground
This is an absolute tragedy.
No offense to anyone who has slept in a tent in this campsite.
But, why would anyone sleep in a tent when they know that there are bears around?
Reminds me of the couple who were dropped off by plane somewhere in the wilds of Alaska to fend for themselves with only camping gear. They were attacked and eaten by a bear. Still gives me nightmares when I think about them.

I saw a ranger who said all of the people followed all the "rules" and that
there wasn't any food left laying around or anything.
While it is tragic to hear of the loss of life and the injuries, what is equally
as tragic to me is that these bears will probably now be destroyed.

very true Val, there are warnings posted that there are bears in the area.
We have bears in our campgrounds and there are warnings, to me, I would never camp in one of those, not in a tent.
It was tragic, 3 different tents.............
grizzly or brown.....they will shoot them.
