Another sleepless night watching some drivel on tv and a studio audience Is baying for blood after a Husband Insists that washing, Ironing, Cooking, Cleaning etc etc Is womens work.

This may me wonder... How many men are out there who actually believe this?

How many women also believe It?

Would you put up with a husband like that?

Today's union of marriage bears no resemblance to what it was a century ago. In the past, there was less love and more convenience. In wealthier households, the husband and wife would even have their own rooms. Marriage was an economical arrangement and even the children became a part of this arrangement. Of course, it was important that a couple had some mutual respect, but out of economic necessity, each had their own role to play.

Nowadays, this is not so. The economical arrangement is different. There is more emphasis on love although fewer children are born. Furthermore, the woman's role in economics in general has changed.

The roles of the individuals are not properly defined nowadays. Both partners go into the arrangement believing that their love for each other will overcome all problems. In reality, this is not happening. Most men still do not expect to do more than their traditional role and most women still want to be the homemaker. The problem is that most women also have to go to work these days.

Clearly, if the woman is now taking on more of the man's traditional role (i.e. going out to work), the man must also take on more of the woman's traditional role. Herein lies the problem.

These things really need to be discussed before a couple get married as it seems that they both go into a marriage with both eyes shut.

I am of course, generalising.

Men hunt...women forage and cook

Men fix......women clean

Seriously, I think most women and men try to take on the tradional roles becuase that's what they lived with growing up with their parents. But, as mentioned earlier, more women are working outside the home now, obliging the men to help with the household chores. That's just common sense to me.

Year ago we had friends that the guy would sit at the table and she would fix his plate. It didn't go over too well with me. She had 2 small children to fix plates for. I'd get so mad I'd tell him to grow up, and fix his own plate like the rest of the adults.

As a kid we were all expected to muck in, clean the house etc. Once when I was embarrassed to be seen hanging out the washing ( yes I got teased about it at school but refusing to do it was not an option I was given) my mother turned and said , if hanging out the washing and doing housework somehow makes you less of a man you probably aren't much of one in the first place. I still can't think of an adequate counter.

I really can't understand women who can't do simple repairs around the house or men who have no idea how to cook.

I had a customer who asked people how many slices of bologna to put on a sandwich after his wife passed away. He had no clue.

My husband couldn't cook anything but toast.........when we split up after 42 years of doing all the usual housework / cooking things, I gave him a Students Cook Book with all the basics in.......guess what....he moved in with a female who I guess did everything that I'd done for the best part of my life.

To answer the question....yes I was a doormat in more ways than one for over 40 years.....not now though.

My 2 sons can totally look after themselves thank goodness and wouldn't expect their partners to wait on them.

Work is work-----------I cook, clean, shop, iron,scrub, diaper, babysit, paint, wash, vacuum, pay bills, save, invest, sing, hum, whistle, grunt, groan, creak, play-------------and so does the Mrs.
