This afternoon I had four couples over for some wine, cheese and crackers. Two of the couples consider themselves to be pretty wine savy and would never pay anything but a premium for their wines. I knew that the couples preferred reds and had several bottles in readiness. I drink daily a cabernet sauvignon that I love and pay on average about $6.00 for a 1.5 l bottle. I bought several bottles of a highly touted cab that cost over $20 (smaller bottle too) and did a blind test with them. You guessed it, they all choose the less expensive wine as their favorite. Maybe if I had spent $50 per bottle they might surely have preferred it over the cheaper wine, but somehow I doubt it.
If you go to your local super market (here in the U.S.) you will see a huge assortment of wines with a huge assortment of prices. I crack up when I see someone standing before the wine shelves agonizing over their selection. :-3

If I have to choose wine, it would have to be zinfandel - if that's the kinda clear one. Don't like the really dry ones or the really sweet or sour ones. But then again, I only like the cheap ones 'cause I know I'm not gonna have more then a glass.

They make a White Zindanfel which is pretty good but most zin is pretty dark colored. I have had very few wines that I did not like to some degree or another.:wah:

I do like a nice Shiraz but also drink quite a lot of Rose wines. Tend to go for wines costing £5 to £6 (about $7 ?). It amuses me when people judge wine by the cost.....ENJOYMENT is the factor for me :yh_flower

This is the wine that got me started on my love of reds. I was in my mid 20's and a friend bought it to have with a restaurant meal. I liked it right off. It's a mild and slightly sweet rose. Now, I prefer the more dark and full bodied reds.
The wine in the pic is a Portugese wine called Mateus Rose. I suspect that it might be a bit less costly in the UK than in the states, not sure.

It was very popular thiry years ago but virtually dissappeared from the shelves. I've recently started seeing it again but not often.

I loathe both sherry and mateus rose. Both are too sweet and I don't enjoy the flavour of either.

You can't sip wine out of a brown paper bag as it just makes the bag all soggy and drips onto the ground.
Of course, you could always suck the soggy paper bag and lick the drips from off of the ground - but I'm too much of a lady to do that. :sneaky:

When I was a kid in San Francisco I used to get a kick out of watching winos in the Mission District drinking their muscatel --- the bottle concealed in a brown paper bag. I could never understand why they bothered with the bag. In those days their particular choice cost 98 cents a bottle.
