I Found $5000.00 Pesos Today!

Post by Saint_ »

So I'm going through a box of photos from the 1980s, and out pops a $5000.00 peso note! Thinking it might be collectible or something because my parents were known to collect things, I checked online and found out that according to the current exchange rate, it was worth $395.00 US dollars!

WOO-HOO! Dinner's on me!:guitarist

Then, thinking it might be worth even more if it was rare, I did some more research. Suddenly, I came across this message, "Mexican money was revalued in 1993 from the old MXP bills to the new MXN bills. MXP bills are worth 1/1000th of the new bills."

Yeah....I found a whole 40 cents.....

%$#@*&*%#$!!!!!:-5

Update: Wikianswers says it's not even legal tender anymore so I can't even get the 40 cents!

Story of my life.....(sigh.)

Who are the notables portrayed on the bill?

People I'd like to shoot for being worthless to me and getting my hopes up....Wait I'll look at the bill...Juan Barrera in color, Fernando de oca, Francisco Marquez, and Augustin Medar to the right, Juan Sequita, and Vicente Surez to the lft and I can barely read the names, so they're probably misspelled.

As Kathy Ellen's post shows, they fought at the Battle of Chapultepec:During the battle, six Mexican military cadets refused to fall back when General Bravo finally ordered retreat and fought to the death. Their names were: teniente (lieutenant) Juan de la Barrera, and cadets Agustín Melgar, Juan Escutia, Vicente Suárez, Francisco Márquez and Fernando Montes de Oca. One by one they fell; when one was left (Juan Escutia, a teenager), and the U.S. forces were about to kill him, he grabbed the Mexican flag, wrapped it around himself and jumped off the castle point to prevent the enemy from taking it.

So, it's a reminder of local history at least.

£60 Is better than nothing I suppose but I think I will pass them on to the kids In the family. Our Father got them when they were Issued and I have had them for years. I think there was an awful lot made at the time.
