As Arctic winter looms, council hands out 2,000 spades and tells residents 'dig yourselves out if it snows' | Mail Online
Well that is charming!!!
All the Council Tax residents pay and we can not get salt or gritters. No, we are to be handed shovels and told to dig our-selves out of the predicted snow coming.
What on earth are the elderly going to do? And can you not just bet your life that some opportunist will be charging to clear the elderly's paths and drives?
Last year was bad enough when all the local stores sold right out of salt and cat litter.

Hmm, if they are going to do that then the must also reverse the ruling that, if you dig the snow off the pavement / drive and anyone slips over where you've cleared, then you are liable to pay damages.
Cannot have it both ways.

As for the elderly, that's what neighbours are for. Salting roads is one thing but no council in its right mind should be out there clearing snow for access by foot.

Last year when Mr O was In slighter better health, he cleared all the elderly's paths In our Close and next road. However, 2 of those elderly's had already fallen prey to an unscrupulous so and so's who charged £20 before Mr O got to them.

Rulings are now being reversed on that assumption within the state of Maryland-it used to be the law that you were responsible for clearing the sidewalk in front of your residence, and liability for any unfortunate mishap to a pedestrian if not cleared properly.

Why do people expect the roads to be cleared everywhere and complain when they don't manage to get round to their own particular bit of not very much travelled road? Clear your own sodding drive you lazy people and buy your own shovel. Come to that keep one in your boot - I do, but that's because i head up north a lot. Most of the time the snow is gone in a couple of days even from residential streets. It's unreasonable to expect non priority roads to be cleared when the main roads are still covered. More to the point who do they think pays for it all? What is the point in having expensive snow clearing machinery sitting around for use every thirty years or so?
We live in a cul de sac - last year in the worst snowfall in thirty years I had a neighbour moaning all the time because no one had cleared the road for him to get out, he didn't have to go to work the shop were within walking distance yet you would think it was the end of the world and the local council weren't clearing the road just to annoy him. This was the pillock that empties the grit bin every time there's the least bit of frost so when we really need it there is none left. The fact is he was a crap driver that wouldn't listen when others told him how to drive on snow. After seeing myself and my neighbour drive out He got stuck trying to see if it was possible for him to get out blocking the road for those of us who actually had to and then couldn't get home because he abandoned his car in the middle of the road. It's really hard to be civil sometimes.
It it snows like last time there are three things that shoud happen.
1) immediately ban all rear wheel drive cars from the road - especially BMW's and Mercedes. They're rubbish on snow and driven by pillocks who think it's not their fault they get stuck and because they get stuck no on else will manage so they abandon their cars in the middle of the road.
2) If you don't like driving in wintry conditions STAY AT HOME.
3) If you nervous about driving in snowy conditions use your common sense and find out how to drive on it or STAY AT HOME!!!!:-5:-5:-5
