VOIP Voice Over Internet Protocol

Post by Lon »

I have cancelled my traditional land line phone service and have gone to VOIP. Base unit and small adapter is set up at the computer and two cordless phones in other parts of the house. Why? I will save about $70 monthly because for $25 monthly I have unlimited calling any where in the world and no time limit. Unlike Skype, it's not necessary to have the computer turned on, just your modem, and calls can be made from the base phone or cordless units.

The clarity is superior to the previous land line and there are more bells and whistles included with the $25 monthly charge than I will probably ever use. You do need to have a high speed internet connection.

Any doing the same?

I have VOIP available on my home broadband but have never used it.

The broadband package I have runs over the landline that I have to pay for separately and includes fairly much all of the calls I make for free.

The broadband at the flat includes the landline but does not allow VOIP.

I use skype for 0845 numbers but I get free local and national calls on my landline anyway.

It might be interesting to compare pricing structures in North America with those in the UK. I'm startled by the notion of having to pay for incoming calls, for example, something I've never heard of in England.

In the UK a land line costs around $15 a month to lease. National calls can be paid for individually or for about $10 a month unlimited. Those prices are often made part of a broadband package, sometimes with TV channels, but they're available as a stand-alone deal too. There's a single national owner of the copper wire phone infrastructure but that carrier is obliged to allow any phone company to lease its capacity in bulk and take the consumer payments.

VoIP, on the other hand, seems to be charged worldwide on the same basis. I have one VoIP number (from Vonage) which drives any normal phone handset, wireless or not, for $10 a month, national calls included (possibly only off-peak, I'm not sure). It operates over my broadband cable so there's no line lease involved.

Vonage has some interesting options, they'll give me additional numbers on a selection of US and Japanese exchanges for another $5 a month each so I can reduce the cost to people ringing me.

I canceled my land line some time ago and saved about the same monthly amount as Lon. With cell phones, who needs a land line? In order to cut down on the cell phone use I did get MagicJack which I purchased their long term plan of about $100.00 for six years of unlimited service (can't beat the price in the long run) but the computer must remain on for MagicJack to work and it only works with Windows. Now I've switched cell phone plans to Walmart's Family Plan of 2 cell phones (wife and myself) for $70.00 monthly unlimited talk and texting and no contract (we were paying about $30.00 more monthly for 750 minutes).

I'm still angry over the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and despise Bill Clinton for that one.

As a matter of interest, if congress passes a bill does the President have the right to refuse to sign it into law?

What my problem with Clinton is is that his commerce secretary negotiated the deal. Ironically, the only two holdouts until the last minute were republicans Bob Dole and John McCain. but I don't think they were holding out for the good of the people as much as they wanted to sweeten the deal for their own lobbyist's interests.

My previous land line for which I paid $32.50 monthly only paid for calls within the local area in which I live (about 50 miles) all other calls within California or out of state like Arizona, New York etc. and over seas calls were handled by a completely different phone carrier that I paid on average about $60.00 monthly. Then there are the charges for cell phone (mostly wife as I hate the damn things). Having rellies and friends all over the US and abroad and a wife that likes to chat is the major reason for my phone changes. My new VOIP is also with VONAGE Spot. There is much competition currently among companies offering package deals of TV, Internet, VOIP Phone, however I have a different company for each service.

The cool thing abouot VOIP you can configure it so that you can unplug your phone and plug it into any eithernet port., anywhere. Same phone, same number. If you move, you just take your phone with you. :) It lets the switch know where to route the call.

I use them at work and have done a bit of development with them (you can push/pull XML to and from the phone, and write custom apps).
