This weekend is a long weekend for the Melbourne cup. Our local pub has been inundated with scores of fisherman because it's also the opening of the snapper season and all the fishing clubs come down our way for competitions etc. It's also the weekend that the pub holds a huge raffle so there are huge numbers of locals and out of towners who visit the pub for this once a year spectacular.
So my long weekend has been all about helping with the raffles and eating meals there and singing up a storm . I've been hesitant to get involved to the extent of being at the pub so often but they have needed every local to do their bit............
OH yeah the point of my thread. Before the new people arrived to run the pub there were always fights because of 'out of towners' either deliberately making trouble or just getting too drunk. (Our publican has not been backwards in banning people which has made all the difference. ) But this weekend has been exceptional. Not one fight !!!! Which is amazing because the pub was packed both friday and saturday night (standing room only) and again yesterday for the music afternoon. Everyone has been sooooo cheerful and happy and really getting into the spirit of things.
So it's evident then that the hostile hotel epidemic they have in Melbourne doesn't really need to occur. Yes I've seen some things this weekend that makes me shudder and I think of how some are going to explain it on to their wives and girlfriends when they get home .......for instance drunkiness and ear piecing simply doesn't go together . And dressing your drunk mate up as the construction worker from the village people is hilarious ........................but where did his eyebrows go? Adn why did they draw a uterus with a fetus on his belly .......How did I see his belly? EVERYBODY got to see his belly because he was so happy to be pregnant. Oh dear . :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
It was interesting to see so many young people requesting songs yesterday and singing along to a bit of country and western music. I'm so glad we had music yesterday because it stopped the groups of men singing in the loudest of voices their own rendition of football club songs. :wah::wah:
So it all begins again this morning and continues until tommorow for the "Race that stops a Nation" I'm in a couple of sweeps and the money is good .
Oh and I'm happy to say I've aquired something special this weekend...Very exiting!!!!
A "Happy Hookers.....fishing club" cap . I didn't wear it yesterday and was chastised (jokingly) for it. If I don't wear it again today I'll be kicked out of the club, or so they told me. funny, didn't know i was in the club!!! :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
I wonder if Oscar picked a horse for the cup?

A jolly tale.

The fact that the landlord has made a positive effort to exclude troublemakers will have attracted those who want to have a good time without having to fight over it. Thimple thycology. If it was just a case of the troublemakers going somewhere else for a while, I expect the good folks would have stayed away as there wouldn't be the certainty of a trouble free night.

It's interesting because all the older/senior locals are coming back and the families with young kids. We don't have that law that all children are out of the pub after 7 pm like they do in Britain. So that means people can go out to dinner and have a late night with mum dad and granma and granddad and the grandkiddies.
looks like we have our country pub (in it's true capacity) back.
