my heart's in the highlands

Post by lady cop »

the poet robert burns wrote "my heart's in the highlands"....my heart is in England. where is yours? .......... My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer -A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North

The birth place of Valour, the country of Worth;

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high cover'd with snow;

Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;

Farewell to the forrests and wild-hanging woods;

Farwell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer

Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;

My heart's in the Highlands, whereever I go.

smart lady Pina. ... Arnold i have loved English history, literature and countryside all my life... not 'quaint', but brilliant. and evocative. what would Christmas be without Dickens? and of course i love an Englishman. i do admit a certain longing for victorian England, the brontes, jack the ripper, sherlock holmes, jane austin, oscar wilde, thatched roofs, the cotswolds...................:)

I personally love how old Europe is! It fascinates me! I have not been to England but would love to. I have been to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and Italy. Would love to go back and see England. How I loved the milk and butter in Europe! Ok...back to the thread topic...sorry everyone!! lol..

My heart is definitely in the Land o' Cotton. The deep deep South will always be my home, no matter where I live. There's a gusto and friendliness there not to be found anywhere else I've lived. Negatives? Sure, as there are everywhere. Dixie's my Mother and I love her, warts and all.

Don't know about quaint but definitely strange. I think the North of england and scotland should declare independence from the south east why should we keep subsidising them?

Used to be quoting this Burn's poem would get your card` marked as a dangerous revolutionary

http://www.alba.org.uk/burns/aman.html

By Robert Burns, 1795

Is there for honest poverty

That hings his head, an a' that?

The coward slave, we pass him by -

We dare be poor for a' that!

For a' that, an a' that!

Our toils obscure, an a' that,

The rank is but the guinea's stamp,

The man's the gowd for a' that.

What though on hamely fare we dine,

Wear hodding grey, an a' that?

Gie fools their skills, and knaves their wine -

A man's a man for a' that.

For a' that, an a' that,

Their tinsel show, an a' that,

The honest man, tho e'er sae poor,

Is king o men for a' that.

Ye see yon birkie ca'd 'a lord,'

Wha struts, an stares, an a' that?

Tho hundreds worship at his word,

He's but a cuif for a' that.

For a' that, an a' that,

His ribband, star, an a' that,

The man o independent mind,

He looks an laughs at a' that.

A prince can mak a belted knight,

A marquis, duke, an a' that!

But an honest man's aboon his might -

Guid faith, he mauna fa' that!

For a' that, an a' that,

Their dignities, an a' that,

The pith o sense an pride o worth,

Are higher rank than a' that.

Then let us pray that come it may

(As come it will for a' that),

That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth,

Shall bear the gree an a' that.

For a' that, an a' that,

It's coming yet for a' that,

That man to man, the world, o'er

Shall brithers be for a' that.

I would have to say my heart's in the Mississippi Gulf Coast. My first memories are of living in Gulfport MS. Riding bike to the beach & walking home from school along the railroad tracks. My brother & I would always stop at the firehall & get a soda from the soda machine. You remember the old machines, where you put your money in & had to PULL the bottles out? I HATED those machines! I could never get mine out!! Going to the Little General for candy & ice cream. I still visit down there, as my father is there. Still feels like I'm going home...

My boyfriend's family is from England, though. His parents came over to the US before he & his twin sister were born. His mother has since passed away. But they were from Fording Bridge (hope I spelled that right). Always wanted to go to England, myself. But he & his family always say "It's boring... nothing there worth seeing." What pessimists!

My working class family and friends would love to learn about these subsidies that were available when they shut the cement factory they all worked in all their life and couldnt get jobs. We dont all live in leafy Surrey and study the Financial Times on our verandahs. There were coal mines in Kent before Maggie's little episode shut them down

O.K. how about the rest of the country stop subsidising London? The only good bit about london is they all think it's paradise, for goodness sake don't encourage them to travel about in case they realise how deprived they really are.

I live in the next County to Arnold, so when he's run out of tea, you'll be welcome over to 'mine'. Come to the UK in May / June...probably the prettiest time of year.

Jerusalem by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England’s mountains green?

And was the Holy Lamb of God

On England’s pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here

Among these dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,

Till we have built Jerusalem

In England’s green and pleasant land.

GMC...you'll like this...my very favourite photo of my brother is him on a hill in Scotland playing the pipes (horribly i might add), and the photo i treasure most of my Mother is in a Scottish field of heather. she loved Scotland and the entire UK, and i used to laugh, she would call those sheep you have in the hills "wooley bully". fond memories. (wipes away a tear)... photo here is courtesy of Scotty, a brilliant Scottish photographer. :)

We have a touring caravan we leave on site near to there so we can go up at the weekends, if you are not in to outdoor sports you would be amazed at what there isn't to do up there.
