There's no such thing as a stupid question. Questions are how we learn.

The day, month and year is how they list their dates. On Dec. 26, 2010 there were 3,289 views.

This thread had about 85,000 hits on December 26 and now...3 days later it has almost 95,000 hits. How can it jump 10,000 hits in 3 days?

People just browsing the Internet, believe it or not. That's where a lot of the hits come from. I think you should start your own site Kathy.

I will go to Ireland one day. I think it would be a good place for an FG meet up. If this contract I'm on now works out. I should be able to do it by midsummer. All given that I can bring my lass along. She loves stars. I couldn't leave her out of it.

The eclipsed moon always appears so much bigger than what we usually see. I noted that the other week also when I was looking directly at the moon.

The only explanation I can think of is that the sun's rays must reflect from a point beneath the surface of the moon.

Amazing that the moon's colour when eclipsed is a reflection of the Earth.

Well, from where you were viewing the Moon this time, the eclipse approched the horizon, and the moon always appears larger when nearer the horizon.

The last time I watch an eclipse, it was rather low on the southern horizon, and it also seemed a bit larger.

This seems to be related to the "Moon Illusion"

The moon here was quite high above the earth during the eclipse and, due to the moon's recent peculiar orbit with the Earth, showed in two different places at different times.

I do understand how and why the moon appears larger when it is closer to the horizon, but it wasn't closer on either occasion.

Personally, I believe that sunlight reflects back from a lower point on the moon due to both the moon's refractive index and the amount of dust on the surface.

NanoSail-D.....

"NASA has formed a partnership with Spaceweather.com to engage the amateur astronomy community to submit the best images of the orbiting NanoSail-D solar sail. NanoSail-D unfurled the first ever 100-square-foot solar sail in low-Earth orbit on Jan. 20."

This sail will be visible in my area almost every night this week. Can't wait to see it!
