School Bullying

Post by Ahso! »

Much of the bullying that takes place in schools is done by adults, and it takes on different forms from authoritative insistence to outright intimidation.

Skye Wyatt of Kilgore High School claims softball coaches Rhonda Fletcher and Cassandra Newell locked her in a locker room to interrogate her regarding her sexual relationship with another girl.

When Wyatt denied accusations of spreading gossip about one of the coaches, the lawsuit states that Fletcher and Newell began to yell and physically threaten her.

I don't know if the word "much" is accurate. Surely "some" of it.

In the beginning of this school year, I'd already heard reports of a gang that went to my daughter's highschool and beat up a kid. The response was for kids from her school to go after the first gang. None of the kids I talked to were willing to consider that the beat up child should report the attack to the police. They claimed it would make things worse. There was slight hesitation when I described my friend's son who had part of his jaw broken off in a school bully fight. After the pause they still maintained that police couldn't help.

None of the kids I talked to were directly involved in the conflict. So, even from a distance, they didn't see the official channels as useful.

In my 7th grade math class, the teacher would constantly chide students. He was a fairly good teacher, but his mild insults were condescending. I started giving it back to him in about the same manner he dished it out. He never told me to stop or that I was out of line, in fact he would banter with me, but come report card time, I received a big fat 'U' (unsatisfactory) for my attitude grade. I asked him about it and he said it was due to the bantering. I informed him I thought it was unfair that I could be officially labeled as disruptive with an attitude problem while his behavior went un-addressed.

That's a form of bullying, too.

Another story:

My son, who was home-schooled tried public school in 9th grade and was bullied by a couple of guys. He was told by myself and my wife to report it to the teachers, who would talk to both boys, but the situation only became worse the more he told. He finally decided home-schooling was by far the better option.

Oh, teachers cannot "chide" students in any manner nowdays, Ahso. Those things are reportable by the students as well as the parents.

I think because of the issue of bullying, parents are more informed that this might occur from an adult. I thinnk children inform their parents more often now, than they probably did decades ago.

Of course, you also have the occassional bullying parent, that verbally abuses an adult at the school. This happens quite often also.

It seems that the teachers are having to work in a much different environment in which they are made targets and given tasks without being given tools to help them perform their tasks.

Schools are one of the more dangerous places a child can be. I don't know how they've adjusted with the teachers responsible for maintaining order and trying to still teach despite all the obstacles. I wonder what advances were made on teacher counselling and support groups.

The teachers in the news article were obviously behaving badly. I'm not convinced they are an indication of teachers as a whole though.
