Strange but it has happened before they think the birds may have been struck by lightening or hail. The fish is a different story polluted water is what they are saying.

The bird count is up to around 5000. Still working on reason.

Pretty weird that they are all within a mile radius or so.

I have never seen that many Red-Winged Blackbirds in such a concentration, before. they must have been migrating.

One thought here is that a flock got caught in an updraft during that storm front passing, and got pulled up into very high altitude, but that doesn't explain how they all fell within a mile or so.

Fish Kill:

I talked to a game and fish guy in Fayetteville. He said there have been several fish-kills in the Arkansas over the last few years. None that many, but several were the same species.

They don't think it's poison because these fish are all the same species, and other species are fine.

I can already see how the conversation went the next morning.

As some bigwigs roll into town from the university, along with the press, and everyone is scratching their head.

the old farts at the local coffee shop are watching and wondering, "Should we mention the fireworks?"

"Naw, let'em run with it. we can use the tourism."

I hear that if god feels the state populace is still not repentant enough, the next plague on the agenda will be the Clintons moving back.:yh_rotfl

I found out that it was not all red wings, there were a number of grackles in the mix, as well.

Then today it was announced that a similar occurrence in Louisiana.

The latest insider theory is that there is an invisible alien ship that the birds collided with.

I guess they were one their way to see the Sugar Bowl.

I was rather unconvinced by "we can discount disease because the dogs that ate some didn't die".

Anyway...

BBC News - Mysterious bird deaths hit Sweden

I think we can exclude fireworks and storms now.

A naturalist my friend knows says that there are reports of as many as 100 birds fairly regularly, and even a few hundred once in a while.

To see so many is so short a time is rather unusual, though.

Same with the fish kills.

These two events so close together heightened everybody's awareness, however, so now the media is super-sensitive to such events.

I don't know.

I think I'll go with the UFO theory.

It sounds a lot more fun.

My guess is that it's just what always happens, give or take a bit. Normally it's not news, this week it's being noticed.
