I enjoy people but like only a few and those are the ones whose company I enjoy.
I tolerate some for as brief a time as possible.
I am by my self now for two months and enjoy the alone time despite being an extrovert.

I have to talk myself into going to social gatherings most of the time if it's a large group. I have sat for entire evenings in a coffee shop talking with three or less people and could have stayed longer if not for the sleep requirements of living.
I think I find people fascinating but don't tend to meet very many who I like. I'm sure there are lots out there but I just haven't met many of them.

I am not comfortable in social situations and large gatherings (even standing in line is difficult for me). However, I am very engaging in those situations when I can overcome the discomfort. I suspect this is the reason many people become social drinkers and use pharmaceutical products. I'm convinced this is quite normal and adaptive in the species, and in particular for the majority of males. I've absolutely intuitively loved the idea of people coming together (grouping - i.e. sports teams, companies, networking and so on.), but personally prefer to remain at a distance as an observer (entertained) most of the time unless I believe I have something substantive to offer.
As for individual relationships: I cherish my alone time, but when it comes to those important to me (i.e. family, close friends or others important to loved ones), I can quite easily choose to sacrifice my solitude for them.
I am extremely comfortable and very good at intimacy or comforting and advising others. I'm an excellent lover (at least emotionally

I'm no good at being alone. I suck at it. I like talking to strangers or being with friends, but hate large crowds. I can't think of many things more unpleasant than Times Square on New Year's or the French Quarter for Mardi Gras.

Sometimes
Meaning, sometimes I like to meet people, and other times I don't want anything to do with any of them.
The older I get, the more I agree with the t-shirt I saw on a guy once.

I'd like to think I am both social and sociable. I'm quiet and a very intentive listener and always polite. I understand pretty much most people have very few close friends. I have maybe 3 that I would call close but many work mates/associates, some of whom I like and most I tolerate. Large social events can be awkward but as Ahso said once that awkwardness passes, I might not shut up. I am very comfortable with my own company. I'm never bored when left to my own devices. I think I'm hilarious company even if no one else does

I generally like most people I know and tolerate most of those I don't like but only a few at a time - crowds get to me and I run away
Even in small numbers I'm not good with people I don't know - I tend to clam up and fade into the background.
Alone time? Fine by me - I'm quite happy with my own company.

I suppose I could answer...
I like people in intimate situations. Im at my best in small gatherings and prefer meaningful conversation. I suck at small talk and it bores me to tears. 2 minutes of that is my thresh hold. I enjoy people in small doses unless a truly remarkable connection happens and once in awhile it does, then Im all in. Ive come to realize that while Im a loner I need people more than I care to admit because my independence is important to me.

After I posted this I got to thinking, almost all of the members I've met have since stopped posting which saddens me.
What I'd like to know is whether there's any cause and effect behind it? That would sadden me even more

What I'd like to know is whether there's any cause and effect behind it? That would sadden me even more :-(What cause and effect and behind what? Are you wondering if folks moving on is your fault? If so, I strongly doubt that. People come and go, some just remain longer than others for a number of reasons.

Not seriously
Given the number of people who have moved on in the past four years the probability is that many of those I've met will no longer be here.
Certainly no thought of "fault" - just musing.

I like the social contact I have with patients and colleagues at work but I no longer enjoy social gatherings unless these are just with my children/grandchildren.
I like the chance meetings with strangers in the shops or in the street...a brief exchange or even a smile can lift my mood.
I enjoy talking with one or two close friends particularly when the conversation takes on a life of its own and seems to effortlessly evolve into something unexpected or inspiring.
I've had my most beautiful moments and my most terrible moments whilst alone but, on balance, I think I prefer my own company most of the time.
