Bomb in Minsk Belarus. Metro.

Post by Scrat »

It looks to me as if the west leaning revolutionaries in Belarus wanted to make a statement. So they set off a bomb and kill some people. So far 11 dead 40+ injured. I heard the station name was Oktoberskaya (October) and then Ploschad Pobede (Victory Square). I have been in that station before, it's quite beautiful. What I'm not sure if is which one it is. I think it's Victory Square. Anyway a lot of government buildings are in between these 2 stations. I think the opposition wanted to send Lukashenko a message. Victims be damned.

It was October station. Smack in the center of the city, there's a few military buildings and I think the Belarussian Duma in the area. Also a McDonalds.

A very graphic video.

My friend in Gomel says this is not the opposition or the Chechens. This is the current governments work. Politically Belarus is a nice calm lake, with a big alligator in it called Lukashenko. He feels threatened because the people are getting restless. The economy is getting bad there.

RT's quite good. I hadn't appreciated quite how many stories only get cursory coverage on british TV. Then again You don't see much about religious warfare in northern ireland on RT either. Why do you assume they are left leaning revolutionaries? Terror has always been the favourite tactic of the revolutionary left or religious nutters? Left leaning revolutionaries almost sound like an oxymoron.

There are groups in Belarus that have been trying to get rid of Lukashenko for some time. I used the term "left leaning" just to try to keep things sorted out. It's pretty complex and confusing as hell but it stems from the history of the area and the ethnic background of the people. Belarus used to be part of the Polish/Lithuanian empire for example, there are groups that want to bring back that part of history, there are groups that want to bring Belarus closer to Europe like in the Ukraine, there are groups that want to bring Belarus closer to Russia.

Currently the economic situation there is not good, politics between countries in the region is playing havoc. Lukas saved most of the industry of Belarus from the economic rape that happened to Russia but now it seems the old bastard can't agree on anything with Russia or anyone else. I don't know the specifics of the situation but my friend there has found that his Belorussian rubles are good nowhere but in Belarus. Normally he can change them to Russian rubles or Ukrainian hyverna but now he has to go to the black market and convert them to dollars or whatever in Belarus. It costs more.

People are getting restless, they want progress. The majority of them want to go to Russia and the CIS, a small majority want to go to Europe/Poland.

They still aren't sure who these individuals were, but they do know they were not associated with any Russian organization. If you look at the Polish and European groups I have to say that they are quite radical in nature and financed from outside the country by various means. I really think that the Polish people involved in this are quite crazy and having traveled in this part of the world many times and met many people, I have developed a strong dislike for most Polish and Baltic peoples. Most of course are normal people so don't take that the wrong way. Anyway I suggest you look into it for yourself if you're interested. I am short of time today, the garden is needing prep work.
