brazen burglars break into jails workshop

Post by the grumps »

BRAZEN burglars cut through a perimeter fence — to break INTO a jail workshop.

The crafty thieves made the unlikely decision to cut their way through the perimeter to gain access to HMP Sudbury, in Derbyshire, before wrenching open the door of a workshop and making off with £1,000 of tools.

It appears they managed to make a hole in the fence before stealing the metalwork kit from the open prison, which is home to 581 inmates.

Staff only discovered the break-in when they arrived for work and reported it to police on Monday.

One inmate, returning from day release to Sudbury, said: "Everyone will find this hilarious."

Another prisoner, also on day release, said: "How can they be expected to keep the prisoners in if they can't keep the burglars out?"

The thieves got away with oxyacetylene cylinders, hoses and tools.

Built as a hospital for the US Air Force for the D-Day landings, HMP Sudbury was converted to a prison in 1948.
