Hummingbirds Freak Me Out

Post by koan »

We get tons of these crazy little dudes every year even though there isn't a feeder there anymore. I want to get a new one but not so much to attract them, because they come here anyway, but to make sure they have something better to do than stare at me.

I'll get one with a perch too so they don't have to beat their wings so frenetically while they visit.

So humming birds think you are some kind of exotic flower? Could be worse, we have midges and they just think everybody os lunch.

We do too. I just changed both of our feeders and they perch on our hanging planters rims. They also drive our cats crazy, they actually tease them. Barnabus likes to sleep on a chair outside, sometimes he will get no peace as the birds constantly buzz around him, always just out of reach. He has caught a few in the past though. Now he's too old and slow so if he wants peace he just comes into the house.

We'll see one hummingbird at a time here. Almost never 2 at once. I'd guess most days we don't see any at all. I wish we had more.

why would such a tiny bird freak you out?

They're speed is what they're known for.

They are one of the most beautiful little birds around.

I love them at my feeders and quite enjoy their antics.

and most will come to your hand.

Their aerobatics are totally amazing. I really do think one could pluck an eyelash on a flyby and never hurt you. I've had one that would get close to me but never land on me. He always kept at least a foot away from my hand, even when I had honey or something on my finger. I have heard people raise them sometimes.

Their aerobatics are amazing!

we went to a bird sanctuary where hundreds landed on everyone's hands as we feed them nectar from a tiny cap, what a thrill!

That's a shame he never came to your hand, maybe one day.

I'm watching a live webcam of one's nest, she had two eggs, one hatched, the baby was so cute and to watch the mother jam that nose down her throat was funny.

She now has another 2 eggs, nest perched in a rose bush, that's how small they are.

I travel often to our local Portland, OR zoo to photograph Lorikeets Parrots. I've had a lot of fun also catering the local hummingbirds that feast of the flowering shrubbery just outside the parrot cage. These are wild, free hummingbirds.

I can easily post photos from my home computers. I happen to be in a McDonald's having coffee and have just my iPad. I haven't figured how to post in forums using this gadget yet. I'll post some photos when I return home later this morning. ;)

I actually never found the paperclip but used a standard imbedded image format that I've used on other forums hundreds of times.

Well of course! That's why you were able to post your pics without having to look for an old paperclip like Oldie, erm, Odie, has to.

*Sorry, must've been a Freudian slip. :yh_angel

BTW, Bob, welcome! Those birds are spectacular!
