So You Think New Zealand is Tropical

Post by Lon »

On a world map New Zealand because it is in the South Pacific is thought by many to be tropical. It's also not that far from Antartica. If the recent earthquakes weren't enough add to it blizzard conditions in Christchurch.

I just saw the snow New Zealand had on today's news, they all loved it and were outdoors playing it in all day.

The news footage was amazing Lon. I've friends in Auckland and the idea the city's had no snow for 80 years before that covering is pretty neat. You're right it's not tropical but it's 20 degrees closer to the equator than I am in England. "not that far from Antartica" is a bit of a stretch, 34 degrees isn't half way to the Antarctic coastline.

If Lon's news clip was titled "Canterbury Faces Heavier Snowfalls Today", how can "I just saw the snow New Zealand had on today's news" be off track?

I have spent several months of each year for the past 20 in New Zealand and I am asked by many fellow American's about it being hot and tropical, but then unfortunately, many of my fellow American's knowledge of geography is sorely lacking.

You are right----The Antartic is still a long way off. The U.S. has used Christchurch as base for operations at McMurdo Sound for many years despite the long flight in getting there.

Well, you're talking about a country where most can't find California without a GPS.

I was talking to a guy the last year about Tasmania, and he thought it as in the Caribbean.

Count me in as one of those vulgar and ignorant North Americans. I was aware there were different seasons on NZ but I pictured it sort of like Hawaii. It snows there too.
