I find it interesting how we can miscommunicate both orally and in writing with the recipient of the spoken or written word completely misunderstanding the meaning. My wife for many years would console someone and say "I am so sorry" when they used the expression that they had "LUCKED OUT'. She thought that they had run out of luck and of course as most Americans would know, that's not what it means. My wife, being a native of New Zealand was unfamiliar with the expression. There are many examples in my marriage that have lead to an argument because of miscommunication. It happens on Forum Garden on a fairly regular basis and makes me wonder how, even with interpreters, the United Nations was ever able to function.
Much of the miscommunication is due to Cultural and Social differences.
Miscommunication??
Miscommunication??
Half the worlds troubles are due to miscommunication, or misread communication.
My wife thinks when I say I am easy going that I am free with money.

I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

Miscommunication??
The written word has to be the most misunderstood though, with no back up of facial expressions to help you out it can be hard to decipher the manner in which the post was written. Maybe the use of smilies could help but with so many abusing them they become useless. It takes time to 'get' someone's sense of humour, took me a while to get yours Lon. Well, actually I got it immediately but had to sit back and watch to discover if that was how you had meant to convey yourself :wah:.
It takes a while to get to know someone in the forum world that's for sure, and there has to be give and take to allow for cultural differences...

Miscommunication??
I find that one of the biggest causes of miscommunication is not listening ( in this case reading), which is different from hearing in that when you listen you hear the words to understand the meaning behind them, as compared to just hearing the words said. I would say here on FG one of the biggest reasons for miscommunication more so than the cultural or social differences is the bias of which some members hold a position and more often than not, would not want to hear what some has to say (or write) that is not align with a certain set of ideal(s) much less want to listen to them. Though the bias of those members could be apart of there social cultural background.

Miscommunication??
I recall a heck of a to do at a family wedding. A guest was apologisng to the bride that some of her family members could not make It. The bride said... 'Don't worry, as long as we have your presence, that's all that matters. The guest took this as 'presents'

I think that many respond and post only to the last post of a thread with out reading all the posts to get the gist of the initial post. I plead guilty to that sometimes.
