I seek advice.

Recently I've noticed that several social networking sites have come onto the Internet and I'm considering registering for one. My problem is that I know few people who have ventured into that territory and I can't distinguish any offering from any other.

My immediate reaction after looking is that perhaps I would be best served by MySpace. I may, of course, have come to the wrong conclusion.

May I have recommendations with reasons, please, for and against whatever sites members mention as possibilities.

I remember when Facebook first came about and I could not see the attraction but I have found It Invaluable since. My only beef with them, Is their security settings. Often, I have believed certain people are blocked only to find them unblocked.

It really depends on what you want from a site Spot and that's what you have to consider when choosing a site.

I myself find FB Invaluable due to a large family all over the country. We can share photographs and news and talk 'Live' on the chat box. Many political parties local branches use It now as does mine and again, It Is Invaluable for posting updates and meetings etc without having to e mail Individuals.

Facebook may well, as you say, be a convenient means of communicating with a prearranged list of people by means of text, pictures, video and sound. I tend to be less sociable than you imply. If anything, I actively avoid online interaction of the sort you describe. I'm reluctant to employ email, for example. Now that I think about it, I note that I don't answer phones often either.

Then 'Twitter' may the one for you. Tweeting does not have to Involve Interaction with others should you choose. It Is beneficial however, for getting out Information.

I'm not a fan of FB though I do have an account, nor do I care much for twitter. Forums are my favorite platform. I am looking forward to giving Google+ a look. I have a my space account but have never used it.

I don't care for any of the social networking sites, and am told not to have them as a teacher. If my daughter posts grandson's photos I have to look over my son's shoulder to see the latest.

That seem's incredibly restrictive of your employers! What's wrong with you setting up a face book account with a name your pupils would not know, only your family and close friends need know, then you can see the pictures of your grandson freely :-6

Seeing the words Google and "privacy controls" in the same post is almost comical. It's hard to see how one can be private in Google+ when there's an absolute insistence on registering with your correct confirmed full real-life name, for example. I bet it will be visible in their search space regardless of your desire.

The bit about Google+ demanding identity confirmation is elsewhere but it's also true.What I mean when I say privacy is limiting who has access to what you type. Circles provides that.

I find it difficult to understand what anyone who surfs the web is afraid of. You yourself have all your personal information on your FG profile, or did last I looked.

Bingo. I tried them for a while and soon racked up an entourage of people I didn't know and couldn't stand. I bailed on that whole scene. The forum scene is much more to my liking and style. It's more ....civil and intelligent.

The idea I might find myself behind the times worries me. If I don't be it I'll never know what everyone's using the Internet for. I'll be outdated. My knowledge will be applicable only among Computer Re-Enactment Groups. I'll be sat at a machine with no mouse, no keyboard and no teletype and asked to show what it used to do. I can only stave off such humiliation by joining a social networking site.

I have a Facebook account, I don't do much on it but it is nice when I either want to show a picture or interact with someone from another town. Friends and family sometimes post interesting tid bits of their lives.

Get a Facebook account and immediately begin playing farmville. That should keep you up to date so to speak.

Ah, it is is not being behind the times to not use social networking sites. You just put your internet time the way you want to.

In fact, a nice book to read is always great relaxation at the end of the day.....

Farmville sounds exploitative. Let me guess - I start as a peon and the established planters make me a loan, I'm in debt bondage and I have to show up to till their fields four hours a day? I'm reluctant, to say the least.

It's the way you set them, you know. The security settings.

You told me last year I was fantasizing when I said this was still on your account, for example. It's still there. That's today's date.

I have to say I am perplexed.

As I told you lat year, the pic was removed very shortly after It was posted.

There are people here on FG who are on my Faceook account and should they go Into my profile and Into my pictures, they will see It is not there and hasn't been for a year.

Having said that, sometimes when my husband uses his Facebook, It will come up on the right hand side of the screen, 'friends photo's' giving a couple of examples. He has often said 'oh, I didn't know you posted that pic' and I have found that the pic being shown Is one I did post but deleted months back. Sometimes, I have been on FB and 'friends pics' have shown up on the screen of fish he caught and posted months ago yet I know full well, he deleted soon after posting them.

I have just gone Into Facebook via my husbands account and clicked on my profile and all my pictures. There Is absolutely not any pic of you In there at all and as I said, has not been for a year.

Not only am I perplexed but annoyed also. I will send a report to FB and see what sort of answer I get and let you know via private message.

I do Intend to get to the bottom of It I can assure you.

On further Investigation, It seems that what you have posted, Is part of 'Julie's house' a file I used for all photographs on Facebook. Now that Is bizzarre because that entire file was deleted a year ago and replaced with several seperate files, In which I seperated family from pets, racehorses from profile pics etc.

As many close friends, family and colleagues are on my FB, I can assure you that I would have no desire to keep one pic of you and a mock up of you at that via Clancy.

Good grief, I was reading the reviews on that product spot-for 8 years old!

There was a news story on Today show this morning, about teachers and facebook. Several states looking into requiring teachers to not have accounts, and no contact with students on social networking sites. (like they haven't been hinting this was coming anyway)

In all honesty, I wouldn't social network with them if I had an account. Seeing them every Friday night at the mall is shock enough-I am totting off to the gym, they all giggle and yell out my name across the mall, while they are being dropped off by parents for "free" babysitting and who knows what else. It makes me avoid as much as possible this workout time, but I shouldn't have to. (once it was a student with a severe health problem-did her parents know she was down there, 10 mi. away from home, what if she got ill, would I be held responsible knowing she was there if something happened? I did tell the principal the next week, since the school has always been responsible for keeping her health a primary concern)

You both seem to have missed that it has WiFi and it instant-messages happily across the Internet through a router pretty much like your computer does. I'm not sure whether it needs extra software to talk to Microsoft or Yahoo messengers though.

I agree with refusing contact with anyone you're teaching, it would be potentially full of complications.

hhhmmm i can't direct to a facebook page as such ...you'll choose your own ..but BBC has a facebook page and so does my local ABC in which this morning i found all the cancellations of buses and road closures due to the flooding we are having ...shrugs ..has more purposes then what you've thought.

facebook is there...if you want it ..it is also there if you dont' ...like life really

I use Twitter. I post maybe 20 times a year.

I post my National Hunt horse -racing tips that In some circles, I sell.... Why should I give them away?

Anyone wanting to see my tips would have to know the name of the horse who beat Ubedizzy at Newmarket In 1976 as that's my account name.

Other than posting my race tips for the season, I have no desire to become a Sally Bercow.

This is why I deleted (not suspended) my Facebook account and I understand that they have pulled the same trick several times since - featured you don't really know are available, definitely do not know the level of risk involved and are not told where the setting is to disable them.

As a result, I no longer trust a word Facebook says and would not touch their system with the proverbial bargepole.

Ask them to delete and they will "suspend" - it is still there and, when they later relax their security settings, available to all.

This is a serious warning anything you have ever told to Facebook is public domain whether you want it to be or not.

This is a serious warning anything you have ever told to Facebook is public domain whether you want it to be or not. Bryn, when I first set up the account, someone told me that once you post a pic, Facebook, thereafter owned It. I didn't pay a lot of attention at the time TBH. I am very wary now.

In circumstances such as this my first thought, as ever, is to ask what John Ruskin might have done and to then do likewise. Sadly, Ruskin would undoubtedly have stuck with IRC (that being a quintessentially Victorian mode of communication). Perhaps he might have tried MySpace on account of the pencil sketches though. I'll give it a go and see what happens.
