A strange moment

Post by spot »

Several distinct cracking noises rose as far as my eyrie. I ignored the first few. Eventually I descended far enough to open the apartment door and call downstairs. Is there any particular reason for these strange bangs, I enquired of the lower household in general.

A complete stranger poked his head into the stairwell. That was my gun, he said.

I'm not sure what he's working on down there but it involves firing nails or staples into the woodwork.

For some reason the children thought the episode very funny.

This sounds like the beginning of a Neil Gaiman horror story.

You are probably okay, as long as the shots are not punctuated by remarks like "where's my money?" and "How's that feel?" :)

He has a way with words. I'm mid-way through Sunbird, in M Is For Magic, and found a perfect Gaiman paragraph:The beers of the ancient Egyptians were flavored with cardamom and coriander, for the Egyptians had no hops; their beers were rich and flavorsome and thirst quenching. You could build pyramids after drinking that beer, and sometimes people did. On the barbecue the beer steamed the inside of the Sunbird, keeping it moist. As the heat of the charcoal reached them, the feathers of the bird burned off, igniting with a flash like a magnesium flare, so bright that the Epicureans were forced to avert their eyes.
