Could a member who doesn't post here now please contact Gill as she Is going Into hospital.

Yes, Gill Is to have a bionic leg fitted.

They are taking her old one and using It as the local cricket team lost one of their stumps last year.

Her new bionic leg Is revolutionary In that It can send messages to her other leg to keep up when running for buses.

Don' forget to send me details of the hospital Gill so some Thornton's can make their way to you.... who knows... You may even have a surprise visitor !!!!

I'm puzzled, I can quite see why they might add a prosthetic that works but why spoil the symmetry by removing the old one? A centrally-located Pistorius accessory would enable her to tuck up both side legs and hop, given a clear stretch of pavement or tow-path.

They don't allow chocolate or cigarettes in hospitals any longer, visitors have to bring fruit or veg, "Thorntons" is proscribed just under "Ten Woodbine" on the contraband list.

Gill, get someone to lend you an iPhone so you can post updates onto FG - using the Internet isn't covered by the "No Phones" signs. You can video the consultants' bedside manners and upload the clips.

Do they do this under a general anaesthetic?

We'll be wishing you an effective recovery Gill, stay in touch.

The outcome of posting the tread that we hoped for was that a member who comes here as a guest would phone Gill at home after seeing this. That was Gill's wish.

As a close friend of Gill's, she would think I was unwell If I did not take the **** out of her situation.

If she's offended, she will soon ring me and tell me.

From other friends of mine who have had this done it's a very long and painful process. Gill is in our thoughts.

Snooze I think you'd have been horrified the pisstaking we did at my dad when he was in hospital half dying. We should be happy for Gill but of course concerned ...I would be sad if she was still waiting. this is actually great news.

My wife's cousin had it done but, because of a heart condition, she could not have a general anesthetic and had it done under an epidural - she said it was OK until they started to knock the new joint in with a lump hammer :wah:

Several friends have had it too and the one thing they all agree on is that if you take it easy after the operation you'll never have full use of the joint, if you do all of the exercises you'll end up not knowing it's there and be up on the dance floor with the young 'uns :-6

Bryn I've heard that about new hips. People that can hardly walk one week, have the operation and don't even have a limp two weeks post op.

I'm sure the surgeon stands back and tells one of the orderlies to do any heavy hammering work.

It's like when dad started having chemo. One thing that made him happy was he'd lost so much weight he could look down and see his Dick again. (something you don't want to hear from your father under normal circumstances.)

But what really pissed him off was the chemo had the opposite affect on him .....his hair began to grow. And this is a man who has spent twenty years shaving his head ...........he didn't want his hair back . LOL LOL LOL We began calling him goldilocks just to rub it in .. lol

Bloody hell !! lets hope Gill it totally out Orthopedic Surgery is brutal to watch and hear saws, drills, hammers, you name it looks like a carpenter shopt in the OR. I have watched a few and had a few Orthopedic Surgeries myself.

When I told Oscar about my pending op. wondering if she had a contact number for a member here, she said she had lost the new number from this member but she would put a thread up. Perhaps the member would read it and make contact with me. I asked Oscar not to bother as I doubted that the person would read it anyway, and I wasn't sure about spouting about me 'ospital visit on an open forum ! But Oscar did it anyway ! I must say that I am so surprised with all the posts in answer to the OP, and I thank you all for your leg pulling (:yh_rotfl oops ! ), it has made me laugh ! :wah:

I must say that I am apprehensive about the op. it should be 14 November for the first hip and they reckon I will be in hospital for 5 days, and then some time after that for the other one. The descriptions in some of the posts are pretty gruesome and even though I have an idea of what the surgeon will be doing, to see it written down on here by people with experience has scared me to death !!! I do know that the 'ball with it's stem' has to be hammered into the centre of the thigh bone (femur), and I was trying to discard that from my thoughts, but somebody writes all about a patient watching somebody using a lump hammer for heaven's sake ! That aside, I feel rather moved by your good wishes and I thank you so much for that.

I don't know about iPods, but I will try to find out if I will be allowed my laptop in there, otherwise I will be offline for about a week ! Can I really survive or will I be overcome with withdrawal symptoms ?

Being a bit of a whimp, I'm not looking forward to post operation as I know I shall be in a lot of pain for a while, however it will hopefully be worth it as I should be a lot more able to walk, and without all the pain, and it will be nice to be able to go for a walk with my husband, without being in a wheelchair or on a battery mobility buggy !

The down-side is your hospital lunch will alternate between tripe onions mash and black pudding onions mash, in which case the box of Thorntons afterwards is essential.

I was rather over-egging the cake so to speak, the poor lady is in her seventies and has osteoporosis so using a lump hammer would have been over the top - and at least you wont have to watch the surgeon making a bodge of it :p

Definitely meant it about the exercises though - skip those at your peril young lady!

May all the spirits shine on you whilst you are there and all the angels watch over you as you recover :-6

If they don't let you have The Thorntons, I will ask them to re-direct them to your home. Either that or I will smuggle them In my pants :wah:

I can't see what the problem Is because I can't see any difference between you having chocs In hospital and me having coco pops In my locker when I was In hospital recently.

Please don't worry Gill.... my old neighbour was filled with dread and apprehension about his hip replacement and he kept putting It off for years. He says he felt no pain and was so surprised at how smoothly It all went that he agreed right away to have the other hip replaced. You will have some dull aching afterwards but they will control that with pain relief.

Don't forget to let me know when you are going In and which hospital.

The food was so good that I always asked for seconds.

Do you know, liver onions mash was my third option but I edited it out because I didn't think anyone would believe me. It has, I understand from those who've gone ethnic enough to try, a unique flavour, but they say the same about toasted mealie worms.

Thank you all for your kind messages and encouragement , and since my last post thanks Bryn, Aftr, and Flopstock - yes I'm having both replaced as well but they are doing the worst one first ! I really can't wait for it all to be over now. :-5

Spotibus you are a stirrer grrrrrrrrrrrr, hospital food has improved greatly since Edwardian times, and there is a very varied selection and daily choice now ! Although I haven't had to go to hospital for myself since my teens, I have visited others in hospital and been pleasantly surprised at the quality and choice offered each day !

Aaah, so it's hip replacement? That's a little less horrifying than having a leg amputated. I've known several people that have had knee replacement surgery and they've all been thrilled afterward.

I got the address of the hospital and time schedule me old ducks and will send those Thorntons... dark of course.

There Is every possibility that I can get up to visit between those days so no hiding under the bed when you see my car pull up In the car park.

I am only coming to poke you In sensitive places and embarrass you In front of your doctor. Tis Oscar's duty.
