Whittling...

My husband paid the princely sum of £2 for this recently at a car boot sale. Inside the basket Is a rather Intricate whittled chicken. It's all made from one piece of wood also.

How many hours would that have taken to make - with the skill involved selling it for two pounds is a crime, disrespect to the maker at the very least.

To call it whittling is the crime, this is wood carving at it most intricate.

Bryn and Bruv, I would be very Interested In your opinion as to country of origin and type of wood.

It's heavy so I am guessing at a hard wood.

No idea to be honest.

Could be anywhere, looks like made for tourist type stuff, Kenya or South Africa or anywhere on the tourist route.

Could be ebony or jacaranda.

Whilst Africa is the obvious source of carved figurines it doesn't have that feel - I'm going to stick my neck out and say the Far East.

Again it's obviously a hardwood but not Ebony by the look of it, I'll go for teak - just to be awkward :-)

Then again, what do I know :wah:

I also get the feeling of the Far East, maybe Indonesia, that sort of region.

I agree with you that It's probably not Ebony because I have a figure of Neffetti In Ebony and that is far heavier and darker.

I think Teak is the best bet.... Thanks.

Well done :-)

I was trying to find similar but failed miserably. From the itinerary it is, indeed, Bali.

Oh WOW.... We have looked on the net and couldn't find anything. Thanks so much for looking. Mr O says Ta also.

Looks like ours may be a copy In another wood and our chicken on the top of the basket is looking down. All the same, I am thrilled to see something on It.... Thanks again !!!

Google has an image search, its crap.

I Googled 'wooden carving man with chicken in basket' or similar, and got lucky.

My first guess was Indonasia. There's a trick to that kind of carving the japanese are masters at it.
