You use of the term was inaccurate, gypsies are a distinct tribal group. Travellers or tinkers as we called then when I were little. are different, most started out back in the days when tenant farmers were being forced off their land, those that didn't make it on the cites or just didn't want to work fourteen hour days six days a week became landless labourers following the harvests. most travellers are their descendants carrying on tradition forced on them by powerful vested interests. It's a moot point whether they should still be able to but if they weren't then you would have floods of illegal immigrants coming here at harvest time to pick apples, hops etc etc taking jobs from British people like the travellers you despise so much.
I also think you need to distinguish between someone born in to that life and latter day hippy types "dropping out" of society. Most drop outs are middle class well off people who can usually go back to where they came from. Thanks to your herp thatcher and her acolyte blair there is now a new generation for whom there are no regular jobs with prospects the very ones you now class as the wastrel long term unemployed.
