The Corporate World.

Post by jones jones »

I wasn't born with the proverbial "silver spoon" in my mouth. However, apart from a short soujorn after I finished university, when I decided to break free from the shackles and do my own thing for six months, (but that's another thread), I have always been employed in the family business. As such I have been a "boss" for much, much longer than I ever was an employee.

So I would like to hear from any members who have been in employed by very large multi-national corporations. Maybe in the banking sector or the auto industry or the IT world.

What's it like working in such an invironment? How many people are you responsible to? Is it easy to get promotion? Are the working hours fair? Are you protected by a Union or by labour laws? Do you enjoy working for a corporation where you are just a number? Would you rather be working for a small business or a family business like me?

I worked from 1974 to 1999 for a large International Financial Services Corporation. I worked in Sales and Sales Management during that time with the bulk of my compensation coming from commissions, overrides. I hired, fired and promoted people, some of whom were salaried and some on commission or incentive compensation. The security of my position was dependent on the performance of people working under me and the bottom line net results from year to year.

I liked being compensated in direct proportion to my efforts and results as opposed to the limitation of a guaranteed salary.

This is obviously not for everyone, but it suited me just fine.

I work for an international data communications company.

I LIKE being "just a number"

Actually I have worked with the same "boss" now for over a decade.

My boss says, "You know what you need to do, go do it, and call me if you need anything."

Sure, we get our share of "Corporate Bureaucracy ", but it never seems to get in the way of doing our jobs.

And there is a certain comfort in the anonymity of being one of the 6000 employees.

I have worked for family businesses (not MY family) and small companies.

If your not part of the family, you're just an employee. That usually falls apart when the times get tough.

Small companies in a start-up mode are Great. Everyone is in it together, there is a defined goal, and you can end up with half a dozen jobs to do. I love it. Problem is that 90 % of start-ups fail.
