Include utilities, insurance, property taxes, mortgage payments or rent in your housing costs. Include insurance, registration, fuel, auto payments in your auto costs.

I'm a retiree with no mortgages so my 15% of gross income is of course low.

Include Cable TV, Phone & Internet in your utilities.

I calculated the other day what we are supposed to be left with at the end of the month. About 80% is spent on all bills (and we don't even have a car, only bicycles.) this does include everything even shopping money (food shopping).

Thanks for the response Chloe, but what percentage of your income is for housing including utilities, not on other bills or expenses?

This does include health insurance that we are obliged to pay for each month. minus that then it would be approx 50 %

When I was first married interest rates shot up so that it was about 70% and crippled us - add the cost of running a car to get to work and take off the government's cut from the remainder and the result was that food was scarce and replacement clothing almost non-existent.

Now I'm an old git I have to run two homes - one near to my family and the other near to my work and the combined cost is maybe 10%.

I'm not convinced that's altogether right but it's certainly life.
