Super PACs and negative campaigning

Post by koan »

I'm kind of glad they got this Super PAC thing legalized. Negative campaigns have transformed the voting process into a depressing, meaningless event. Voters started to demand that politicians talk about issues instead of attacking each other personally. Result: Super PACs were formed to run hate campaigns so that the politicians didn't have to actually say that stuff themselves and there is almost nothing else being discussed except the personal flaws of each candidate.

So now you get to vote for one of two or three racist, tax evading hypocrites. Yay!! What is the effect on public morale when we know that our only options for the highest public office, representing our entire culture, has to be an asswipe and we just get to choose which ass it's going to be?

How many people are thinking there are actually good, moral, wise individuals who exist in every neighbourhood and would make a better president or prime minister?

Too bad we can't use the write in space on the ballots to nominate Joe Smith from the end of the street.

The problem is that our system filters out the good guys. Only the truly narcissistic Machiavellians have what it takes to succeed in American politics.

I ran for a position on my home owners association board because I didn't want the board to interfere in how the home owners owned their homes. The rules were pretty restrictive and I'd heard horror stories of HOAs becoming little fiefdoms before. I found I just didn't have the energy or interest in attending a meeting I thought shouldn't be held of an organization I thought shouldn't exist to make decisions on things I thought were none of our business.

This is why real libertarians will never run Washington.

We have thousands of brand new communities built from scratch on formerly undeveloped land. As a result, the community doesn't have time to develop organically, and home owners associations have become a common remedy. HOAs set all manner of rules of how the neighborhood will be run, often including the color of the house and height of the grass. Don't get me started on my opinion of such organizations.
