The Best Kept Secret in the South Pacific

Post by Lon »

I am off to the Cook Islands in about three hours. After a one hour flight from Nelson, New Zealand to Auckland it's about a three hour plus flight to Rarotonga. I was last there in 2002 and look forward to this trip. We will be in Rarotonga for seven days and then on the island of Aitutaki for seven days. The Cooks are very popular with New Zealanders and Austrailians but not too much of the rest of the world, no doubt due to it's remote location. Despite it's remoteness, they do have Wi Fi and I will look forward to posting via my I Pad.

I am in the "Koru Club" awaiting the flight to Rarotonga and enjoying a glass of Merlot along with my Beef Lasagne. We will not arrive in Rarotonga until 12:05 AM. Since wines are a bit pricy in the Cook Islands I purchased several bottles to take with me.

Arrived late in Raro so slept in this AM. Eggs Benedict, fresh fruit and coffee for breky then into the lagoon for a swim despite the rain. $15.00 NZD for five day wireless access.

Here it is Saturday AM toughing it out at the beach in Rarotonga and finally figuring out how to upload a pic taken with my I Pad. We leave Sunday AM on a small 10 passenger plane for a one hour flight to the island of Aitutaki where we will spend the next seven days.

Saturday morning and still on this incredible island of Itutaki. Leave tomorrow to go back to Raratonga and then New Zealand. Interesting that most of the foreigner that I have met on this trip are from Germany. On pat trips to this part of the world that seems to be the case as well.

Itutaki Island, Cook Islands. The lagoon is immense and completely surrounds the island. It is not over six feet deep at any point and is abundant with corals and tropical fish. There are a number of islands within the lagoon. Population of Itutaki Island is 1,400 including the average tourist population
