Hypocrites

A large percentage of those who take to spiritual life become hypocrites. It is easier to be a hypocrite, to make an outward show without changing inwardly, than to pass through all the troubles and difficulties of intense spiritual life.:-5

I believe jesus (and indeed Budha) said something along the lines of 'don't listen to those who cry out on the street corner for they already have their reward in full' .....'Go to in to your private room and pray in private'.

I believe what you are referencing is akin to Spiritual Materialism. Most easily seen in those who seek spirituality in order to be more spiritual than the other people around them. The ego is a wonderful labyrinth full of many traps.

THE EGO IS A wonderful LABYRINTH.

Spiritual life is far more comforting and entertaining than material life. For that reason you get terrible attached to your spiritual practice. This attachment is a great obstacle to spiritual progress. Get over it and reach for the divinity that lies beyond it.
