Given the track record of recent governments it is several steps too far.

Tony Blair, in particular, was Big Brother personified and the steps that are being proposed in the name of "Anti Terrorism" are straight from the manual on how to set up a police state.

It is the reduction of the controls to be applied before they can monitor a specified persons communications that creates the problem.

I think some are over-reacting over this. The tabloids are scaremongering.

The payroll to monitor every single person In the UK 24/7 would be astronomical.

As I understand It, these measures would be there under the Terrorism Act and used on known terror suspects...

The chances of your local authorities checking your every e mail and google search are slim

No-one is suggesting that they will monitor every single person in the UK, however, suggesting that it will only be used on known terror suspects is naive.

If you are not on their known watch list, just a member of the general public, they check every e-mail, etc. that contain certain keywords that draws their attention.

Realistically the security services will look at anything they want anyway and they don't need this law but what it does is give them a carte blanche to monitor any group they feel like on tbe pretext they might be a risk. Being a member of Greenpeace or similar organisations puts you on he radar as it is as does getting involved in arranging demonstrations. The notion that british governments will always be benign is laughable.
