I was only 10 years old but was fascinated by this song despite not understanding one bit of the lyrics. I would hum the tune and mimic the lyrics (not at the same time).

Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answers...Rainer Maria Rilke
Goofy Lyrics From the 40s
Yeah, this was one of my mom's favorite sings. She'd sing it as she washed the dishes. I only remember one verse...which is one verse more than the children of today know.
They do not know:
Any Christmas Carols other than "Silent Night" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."
"Waltzing Matilda"
"John Henry"
"My Darling Clementine"
"I've Been Working on the Railroad."
"I See the Moon, The Moon Sees Me."
"Kookaburra"
"I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing"
"Vincent"
and a host of songs to numerous to mention.
They do know:
"Rollin' With My Homies"
"F*** Da Police"
and
"Stupid Ho"
Could this be what's wrong with our society?

I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

I think the same thing was said when the Beatles and Elvis came on the scene.

To a certain extent, so do I. Of course, modern education is responding to increasing pressure, derision, and disrespect from society and, as a result, doing away with all kinds of "fluffy" classes like art, music, and drama. I am against that.

I'm not sure either the Beatles or Elvis exhorted children to "run down that street and stab the mailman." (Insane Clown Posse)
