Dogmans course Australia wide certification

Post by fuzzywuzzy »

Been doing this course lately and it's frying my brain. I'm not a 'maths' person until i see the maths in action. The whistles, hand signals, radio calls. The calculations and formulas are ..............well full on . When I talk to other doggys they say they didn't really have to know any of this stuff but apparently things are changing. And if we don't know all this then the Americans will come and take our jobs......????? (I don't know why this is being said nor why it's not elaborated on but it's how it's going to be in the future.) There's a whisper in the wind that we are about to become more criminally liable in the workplace.

This is the basics of what I need to know even before entering into a dogmans job ...So why is it when you put these figures to experienced dogman they look at you dumbfounded.

Natural Fibre Rope

D mm X D mm = SWL in kgs

F.S. W.R.

D mm X D mm X 8 = SWL in kgs

Weight ÷ 8 = ü answer (FSWR in mm)

Chain Grade

L = 30, M = 40, p = 50

D mm X D mm Grade X

0.3 = WLL in kgs

GradeT =32

D mm X D mm X 32 =

WKK in kgs

Angle Factors

30 ° = 1.93

60° = 1.73

90° = 1.41

120° = 1.00

Load Factor

Square Load = .5

Round Load = .75

Task 1 : Slinging Techniques

D mm X D mm X 0.79 X H m X WOM + Tare (in kgs)

then Weight of Load ÷ 2 ÷ 8 = ü answer

= Gives Sling Size (in mm)

Task 2

D X D X Grade X 0.3 = L, M, P, Grade Chain

D X D X 32 = T Grade Chain

DX D X Grade X Angle Factor = SWL of Chain

Task 3

D X D X 8 X Angle Factor X Reeve Factor = SWL(in kg)

Maximum length of beam = Answer divide Steel Beam Weight

Task 4 : Crane Usage

WXR ÷ B ÷ N ÷ V = ü answer = Packing Size

W = Load plus half the mass of the boom (in tonnes).

R = Distance from load to back wheel support (in meters).

B = Distance from end of outrigger to back wheels (in metres).

N = Number of outriggers on the loaded side.

V = Soil bearing pressure (in tonnes per square metre).

Task 5

Rated Load - Hook Weight = Crane Capacity

Task 6

Structural/Instability

well wish me luck cause my exams are next tues and the following tues.

Yes thank you bruv, worked a treat. But get this ... I moved away from everyone thinking as I used to do at school it was a test etc. Then afterwards I learn everyone was helping each other out when the instructor left the room. I was standing outside after it and one of the guys come up to me and asks why I moved away. Apparently I could have asked for help because apparently we're a team . WTF? GGGRRRRRRRRR!!!! But I'm glad I got the written assesment all right ...I was one of three who did ....on my own .

Anyway only have these three sums and the Prac next week. I got task three and four wrong. Wrote out the formula then didn't bloody use the '8'...... why did i do that? Number four? don't even ask, I knew I had to square root something but couldn't remember where I was supposed to do it .

OmG there was one question I sweated over. Had to put it down exactly right. I kept repeating it over and over again before we sat down ....then I came to it in the test ..........OH ****!!! do you think I could remember it? " Q) How do you determine the maximum angle of a four legged sling A)The greater of the two angles between any of the two opposite diagonal angle legs of the sling. I got it near enough to make sense though .............yes I was surprised too :)

Oh and the instructor chucked a googly at us ...before the test he says "megan with me" and walks out the room into the work area..... everyone was looking at me leaving the room. I just shrugged and followed. he wanted to test the ropes...... Oh **** I thought that would be next week!!! I told him straight out I concentrated ont he written exam...Oh god Oh god OH god.

Now being cack handed as I am he tells me to do a knot and I do it and he says "No" ....I do it again and he says "No"..... right I'll do it my way then ........So I do it my way and he says "right". After that little episode and after doing hte bow Knot (again my way ) he says call out someone else. I raced back to the room burst int he door and yell "He's testing Knots"!!!!! mark you're next . There's a chorus of **** **** **** in the room and everyone reaching for their books and pieces of rope. Why did I go first?

All done. I'm a Dogman . They made me do the whole test (calculations) again. 10 minutes it took . Breezed through, did everything I didn't do last time and got it done easy peasy japaneasy ..........Oh yeah fozzy bear!!!! I was outside having a smoke and said to the instructor I got them all right ..and he said how do you know? I said I just know that's all. ..and he said what was that spare paper on the desk beside you ........hhhhhmmmm never accuse me of cheating in a test or exam. it's not a good thing ..so I say ..."I'll have you know i"ve never in my life cheated on a test EVER!!!" then he smirks and says he glanced over it and I did do well. :) cheeky barstard.

Prac ...hhhmmm After I cracked the shits with myself. Passed. proved competent. It became too windy for the tower crane (but I got one lift with it anyway yeehah!!! and radio sigs.) So we had to use the franner... **** !! hand signals, did fine .. but at one point I needed the instructors attention cause I needed to give him another direction, he was talking to the others . Unfortunetly the boom is still working at this moment .... get my whistle out and calling to the others he's not looking! he's not looking. Then he looks and all was fine ...........okay now I know the whistle is not just for signals ..it's "MAY I HAVE YOUR ****ING ATTENTION PLEASE!!!"

Then we had to put the load on the back of a truck which OHS says we can't climb and there's no scaffold................And I'm a short arse and can't reach the bloody hooks......thinking thinking thinking....instructor: swearing swearing swearing..... me thinking thinking thinking again Then swearing in reponce to instructors swearing....then it clicked.

I asked why all the sudden we had to put things on the back of a truck.... (we hadn't done that bit) The instructor reckons the job is all about 'thinking on your feet, crane drivers don't die, 'doggers' die.", "you thought on your feet.... you pass". At the end of hte day he says "okay listen up" and all that ..went through the room... "Megan you have to get angry more then you'll have no worries" ..remember crane drivers WILL yell at you !!! ..........All I could think about was those people who know me, in fear right now, because the best advice this week was for me to "get angry more" . That's funny as hell. :)
