Post by Betty Boop »

Last week we were walking around in woolly cardigans and coats freezing in chilly winds, today it's cooking out there. Further in town where there is little wind and what wind there is is actually hot (unheard of around these parts :wah:) the heat is unbearable. Luckily where I live the wind is blowing harder off the sea and as a result is keeping the temperature down. I know we shouldn't complain about nice weather but how about a nice build up to it so we can all acclimatise ourselves :wah:

Hot weather = the silly season and yup it's certainly here, up country nutters are driving around our roads with fear across their faces as they watch the roads narrow and realise they have no spacial awareness of their own cars. School runs are taking twice as long now, roll on the summer holidays :guitarist

It's very very hot here In South Gloucester.... Can' t walk the dogs.... too hot...

However, the peple carriers and 4 X 4's are still blocking the road because lard arsse parents won't walk 500 yards to collect their kids from the school.

I live in the high desert of New Mexico. It's usually very nice here at 5,500 ft. Never goes above 100 and never below 0. We also get and average of 265 days of sunshine. We like to talk about the weather, which is funny to me, since we basically have none.

But I used to live in Phoenix, Arizona. That was ridiculously hot. I remember one time it was 120 degrees in the shade there, and I was working outside. I grew up in Northern Montana. We used to go to school in wind chill that measured -70 degees F. No wonder I've found a nice middle with extremes like that.

Are you coping with the sunshine? Short shorts and bare feet?

That was me last week when I went to babysit for my granddaughter...the winding lane to the village is so much quicker than the more sensible route. The former has single lane, right angled bends with no visibility at all...it's all about hope and prayer.

I'm surprised you ventured that way then, I remember driving my car round about all those posh little villages down your way a few summers ago and you wondering what would happen if we met another car :wah:

Lightning flashing around about here now, apparently it's been over the bay here but I missed it. Currently flashing around Land's End it better stay that way!

It reminds me of when I was young...my father was driving along one of those lanes...we met another car head on. My father automatically reversed and we sat there waiting for the other car. Time went on and my father ventured slowly around the bend only to meet the other vehicle doing the same. Again, both drivers reversed and again the same thing happened. It was like some crazy car dance. I know it resolved because we would still be there today if it hadn't, but, for the life of me, I can't remember how.

We're free of electrical effects up here but it's miserably over-warm. I may leave off this zip-up hoodie if tomorrow's the same.

Can see the rainy storm front moving off this morning to be replaced with white cloud and blue skies. Feeling hot again out there, can't help but wonder how many people have ended up with sun stroke over the last week

Had a wonderful day yesterday, meeting up with friends in Kingston for coffee and then moving to Twickenham for the Premiership Final of Harlequins against Leicester Tigers. I had the floppy hat and shades and spf 30 lotion on and there was just enough shade to stand around at the Harlequins ground, the Stoop and eat venison sausages and hog roast while swigging copious water (I'm a Tigers supporter, but most of my friends are Quins, some fanatically so). I can't say I ate much - too hot - but it was fun chatting and being with supporters from all over - I sat next to a Gloucester supporter (who actually lives locally, but we only let him out from under his stone on special occasions), and particularly noticed a few from Redruth Rugby Club, who'd come a long way!

Because the Stoop is quite literally over the road from Twickenham Stadium, the Harlequins team didn't need a team bus or anything, they just jogged out of the back door of the Stoop, over the footbridge and into Twickenham Stadium. We all stood and applauded, while my friend in his Harlequins blazer (yes, honestly) went nuts, and I noted to myself that, indeed, it was Chris Robshaw, the Harlequins and England captain, who I bumped into in my local Co-op a few weeks back. After the crowd thinned a bit, we followed over the footbridge and in to Twickers itself. There was the ESPN broadcasting set up and stalls selling Pimms or Guinness or ice cream (we all succumbed to ice cream) and asking how fast you could pass? and a thoroughly good natured crowd of all ages and both sexes having an excellent day.

The game itself was tense and exciting, but Tigers didn't play as well as they have and Quins ran out deserved winners. The attendance was in excess of 81,000 and man, did we make a racket at times! I last saw my friends off to the Stoop to celebrate and have yet to enquire what sort of wreckage has emerged today. It is Harlequins first league win since they were relegated from the premiership, clawed their way back up, and have been developing well for some years so a little celebrating is understandable. A very important win for the Club.

Fortunately our seats were in the shade, but even with all my precautions I'm definitely a bit tingly on the wrists and cheekbones this morning. Staying quiet and cool indoors! :)

Never been to Twickenham, bet the atmosphere is amazing. At least you were sensible I'm sure there are plenty who weren't, not sure I want to know about the wreckage :wah: Were the Redruth guys wearing their black and gold then?

I watched the rain front move off then we had a few hours of sunshine before it clouded over as another front arrived, meant to be another day of cloud cover here tomorrow.

Not just the guys, but the gals and the kids, though I couldn't swear all were strictly rugby shirts.

The wreckage is not that severe since everyone it seems was too baked to want to drink much alcohol but dear old Simon now resembles a traffic light on "stop". When the rest of us were all putting on the slap before heading over to Twickenham he refused, claiming he intended to let Nature have her way with him. Despite us telling him that Nature had already had her way several times and the results are best described as interesting he couldn't be convinced. chuckle. As Confucious may have said: "There are few pleasures quite as great as watching an old friend fall off the roof."

No rain yesterday, and none today please - we have the West Indies in trouble in the Test Match.

What with the sun and rain you are getting down there, the County must look gorgeous just now.

That's a grand tale of the final.

The West Indies, by contrast, appear to have collapsed today. I don't think they can blame the weather.

Tis looking ok, but it was damn COLD today :wah: had cloud and fog cover most of the day, when the sun did appear it would suddenly get very hot very quickly but sadly the fog didn't really burn off until late afternoon and then by six it was rolling back in again. Same again for tomorrow it seems.

Series win. We're still top of the Test rankings and going nicely in preparation for the South Africans despite the heat, though our preparations will suffer if the weather turns and wrecks the third Test.

Feeling thundery here. The breeze has gone and it's very muggy.

Ooops, posts crossed.:yh_angel

No particular plans to get down to Cornwall. Funds are stretched at present and though things should resolve soon it's not a situation I can base plans on.

Am looking at three days walking down the Avon to Southampton as the limit of ambition the way things are. Will have to see how things go in the near future.

Same here, can't even afford a weekend camping locally at the moment. It's a shame though as us three children had hoped to take mother away somewhere for a long weekend between September and December. Mother is 80 this year and my sister is 50 so it would have been nice to mark the biggies with a family trip away but we're all struggling this year. Apart from mother maybe, she's currently in Croatia and is headed to Malta at the beginning of September :wah:
