A break-up, at the time, can be so devastationg. This simple old song by Peter and Gordon has always touched me.
When I see her comin' down the street
I get so shaky and I feel so weak
I tell my eyes look the other way
But they don't seem to hear a word I say
And I, go to pieces and I wanna hide
Go to pieces and I almost die
Everytime my baby passes by
I tell my arms they'll hold someone new
Another love that will be true
But they don't listen, they don't seem to care
They reach for her but she's not there
And I, go to pieces and I wanna hide
Go to pieces and I almost die
Everytime my baby passes by
I remember what she said when she said
"Goodbye baby. We'll meet again soon maybe"
"But until we do, all my best to you"
I'm so lonely, I think about her only
I go to places we used to go
But I know she'll never show
She hurt me so much inside
Now I hope she's satisfied
And I, go to pieces and I wanna hide
Go to pieces and I almost die
Everytime my baby passes by
Go to pieces and I cry
Everytime my baby passes by
Go to pieces and I cry

Nice one, Theia and Betty !!! I like Sound of Silence too, and I am a Rock. Simon and Garfunkel were great. Paul Simon on his own.. Slip Sliding Away, and Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover.... wow...
Do you get songs stuck in your head. I have continual earworms. One doesn't leave until displaced by the next... sigh.

there is a danger in loving somebody to much
and its hard when you know its your heart you can`t trust
There is a reason why people don`t who they are
Sometimes love just ain`t enough. lol

From Elton John's "Your Song":
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross

Bernie Taupin is quite the lyricist.
For me, it's Jim Steinman. He has a decent claim on being the best lyricist in the last 50 years.

For my Dad.... Midnight Summers Dream... the Stranglers
Woke up on a good day
And the world was wonderful
A midnight summer dream had me in its spell
I dreamt about an old man
Sat and watched the rain all night
He couldn't sleep a wink as all the drops fell
He told me of the beauty
Hidden in our foreheads
He told me of the ugliness
We show instead
And when we put a foot wrong do we learn
From all the pain
A midnight summer dream as he watched the rain
Then at midnight he poured another drink
And bent my ear
After midnight we sat up half the night
Or maybe more
And he began to tell me what it was all for
I woke up in an armchair
He had gone I don't know where
Left me there to sit and look at the rain
Don't remember much at all
But his words were echoing
A midnight summer dream and then wake again
Maybe I'll never find him
Maybe he's gone forever
Maybe I'll have to sit here
Watching the weather
One thing's pretty certain helped me
Make it in the night
Showed me somewhere else between wrong and right
And at midnight if you can't sleep
Then I can bend your ear
After midnight we'll sit up half the night
Or maybe more
And I'll begin to tell you what it is all for
Wake up on a good day
And the world feels wonderful
Midnight summer dream has me in its spell

Great minds think alike!!! Fakin' It was the story of my life in 1967. That summer, I took a Greyhound Bus from Southern California to Oregon to escape my parents and hang out with my grandparents for awhile. I sat next to this mysterious, beautiful, to good to be true girl for most of the trip. I debated going with her instead of on to Portland, but didn't. I'm older now, but Fakin' It still reminds me not to be a turd, because occasionally a sweet fragrance blows through your life, even if only briefly, that cannot be unnoticed.
Paul Simon on his own . . . . . Does anyone think he can ever top Graceland?

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand-to-hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage peak from the Green Berets
Ballad Of The Green Beret written by Barry Sadler and Robin Moore.

Early in the morning factory whistle blows,
Man rises from bed & puts on his clothes.
Man takes his lunchbox out in the morning light.
It's the work the working, just the working life.
Through the mansions of fear,
Through the mansions of pain,
See my Daddy walking through them factory gates in the rain.
Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life.
It's the work the working, just the working life.
End of the day factory whistle cries.
Men walk through those gates with death in their eyes.
Factory takes their hearing, factory gives them life.
It's the work the working, just the working life.
The work. The work. The working life.
Factory: Bruce Springsteen
(However, in my opinion he ruined a beautiful song which was vastly improved by the Flying Pickets version)

Only in America
Can a guy from anywhere
Go to sleep a pauper and wake up a millionaire
Only in America
Can a kid without a cent
Get a break and maybe grow up to be President
It's slightly tragic that what started as a 60s protest song has ended up a patriotic anthem.
"Fighting soldiers from the sky" on the other hand was not, before anyone wonders, brought into this world for satirical purposes though there are those who think it's all it's fit for.

That song reminds me of Five O'clock World, sung by friends of mine, The Vogues.
Up every mornin' just to keep a job
I gotta fight my way through the hustlin' mob
Sounds of the city poundin' in my brain
While another day goes down the drain
But it's a five o'clock world when the whistle blows
No one owns a piece of my time
And there's a five o'clock me inside my clothes
Thinkin' that the world looks fine
Tradin' my time for the pay I get
Livin' on money that I ain't made yet
Gotta keep goin', gotta make my way
While I live for the end of the day
'Cause it's a five o'clock world when the whistle blows
No one owns a piece of my time
And there's a long-haired girl who waits, I know
To ease my troubled mind
In the shelter of her arms every thing's okay
She talks and the world goes slippin' away
And I know the reason I can still go on
When every other reason is gone
In my five o'clock world, she waits for me
Nothing else matters at all
'Cause every time my baby smiles at me
I know that it's all worthwhile
