I'm curious. Do you read just the last post on a new thread and respond or do you read through most of the responses to the initial post and then respond?

Some of the responses seem to have nothing at all to do with the subject of the initial post.

I read the thread from the beginning. I don't have a long history here, so I don't know what ongoing historical context some bring to discussions. I must admit that I am sometimes confused at some of the tangental responses.

Glad I am not the only one.

I must be weird. I read until I find post that fires me up. For good or bad. Then I reply. Frivolous posts are what I use Facebook for.

Like. lol

Some folks, like you, need to get "fired-up" before they post. This does require reading the enire thread.

For me, it's according to the length of the thread if I read the entire thread before I post. If the title seems interesting I will read the enire thread before I post or not.

There are some on-going threads that do not require folks to start from the beginning before posting. They are certainly invited to do so, however, but the choice is theirs.

As I have mentioned at earlier times, foks sometimes confuse a forum with a chat room and that is why they will go "off-topic" at times. JMO

You have to start at the beginning, avoiding long threads that would require a long attention span.

Mostly read from the start. Reserve the right to have exceptions. :)

Yep, what Clodhopper said. If something grabs my attention and my reply is off topic, I post it anyway. I don't see topic integrity being a major issue here.

Depends on time. I do like to read entire threads but must confess that I have skipped pages, responded and then looked a twat.

I many times respond to a particular post without reading a whole thread. If it's a crime then I'm guilty!

I start from the last unread and respond to the posts in the order in which I read them - as I'm away for days at a time I often respond to a post only to find that the point has been covered in the next response I read.

I read the OP, and think about it for a sec or so, then may roll down through the replies.

I do try to stay on topic, often, but then again, I am easily distracted, and often, by the time I get to the end of the thread, the OP topic has become lost.
