I will never understand why people use this. Who reads a thread then goes back to check over whether someone may have altered or added something to their post? Is it just a sneaky way to add bits in knowing that the majority of readers will miss it seeing as nothing flags up to let you know a thread has been modified!

Good lord, what did I do this time?

Before I post, I check. After I post I check again. If I see infelicitous wording I might then tweak a bit, I dislike leaving an unclear sentence.

You might know the correct word, but it goes something like 'circumlocution', that's what you are guilty of.

Don't know why you have jumped into reply here......unless you feel it applies.

I had a disturbed night last night, I was twitchy from the start and it's not worn off. By rights I ought to log out and sit in the Cathedral for a few hours.

No you don't just do that, you posted a post earlier, an apology for using the word liar. Your post sat there for a little while and then you went in and added a further quote and a question. Had I not looked online I wouldn't have known you were modifying a post and wouldn't have gone back to read the post. I did go back and read it and I note you've added things in.

I propose that the modifying post function is perfectly fine to correct spelling mistakes or grammar. What is not fine is deleting parts of posts, adding chunks in or totally re-arranging the structure. If you feel you've not got your point across well originally, quote yourself in a new post with the revised statement below. That way I won't spend 10 minutes here sitting reading a post only to find out it's changed a few minutes later or spend time staring at a post wondering if I have totally mis-remembered the original post.

I've found the post to which you refer. You're quite right, I thought after that I'd only answered one of Snooze's paragraphs and the other should be dealt with. I tend to dislike posting a second time into the same thread before anyone else does. I'll do that in future rather than plonking my afterthought into a thread that might already have been seen.

I always felt you write more in the style of Virginia Woolf, though from a standpoint which avoids all that class privilege.

I believe this type of behavior was tagged an 'odie-ism' some time back. Saying one thing, deleting or changing it and then declaring you never said it in the first place.

that's why we took to quoting her, as I recall.

What you done here Spot, with your confession, is remove the power from your 'find where I have ever said anything like that' challenges you throw out from time to time.

I try to only 'eta' if it is right after i've submitted the post.
I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

That's me. I'll edit sometimes several times to fix grammar or spelling, or if I come up with a better phrase right away. If it's been more than a minute or two I'll at "eta:"

I modify posts all the time.

I don't do It for any underhand reason In fact the thought never occurred to me.

I have to edit all the time as the remnants of cheese crackers remain under my O and G on the keyboard.

I do go back and modify posts here and there because I am usually multi-tasking at the time and I am distracted when I write my post. I then think ' Bugger' and have to go back.

I have only ever edited a post on seeing some glaring mistake and that is almost instantly.

Is it possible to edit posts that were done days ago ?

I thought that facility was lost on leaving the thread, if that is not correct it should be.

Can editing posts be altered in the control panel, so that on leaving a thread, or after so much time, the post remains un-editable.

Little known fact: Peter O'Toole is the only male actor in existence. They just use a really good make-up team on him. TV and movies aren't going to be the same when he dies.

I go back in and alter spelling mistakes and typos all the time.

What I don't get is people that go back and add afterthoughts or take bits away therefore changing the structure of the posts. If the post is within a thread that happens to be fast moving any alterations are missed as people participating are keeping up with newer posts. So, chances are, if you do employ this method be aware that some people are not reading your after thought, therefore in my mind modifying posts in that way is pointless :wah:

Can the counter be set for a shorter time, such as 3 minutes ?

That is enough time to reread and then edit most posts.

I always believed that, if a post was changed, it would show as "edited." So I didn't cotton on at all. If a post was different to what I'd remembered reading, I would blame my age :)
