Space-saving ideas?

Post by Wild Fire »

I have just purchased a townhouse (owning my first home...weird) and the kitchen I have is, in all reality, microscopic. Very little counter space and only 2 walls to work with, one of those taken up by the stove and sink and counter.

What I am wondering is, does anyone out there have any storage making/creating space-saver tips, ideas, thoughts?

Is there a product(s) out there that you love because it's a compact, easy to store, gives you more space thing?

I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions!

(Yes, you're right, this thread does need a picture. Soon as I have one, I'll add it to the thread.)

Out here in Germany, they have notoriously small kitchens as well. Only 1 person can seem to fit at one time without confusion. What we do is have a big drawer where the appliances go. We put away most of the dishes in the cabinets. Anything left on the surface is mostly stuff that gets used like Microwave or a can open.

I saw an article that recommended open shelving all the way up to the ceiling rather than cabinets with doors. It opens the space up and gives you more storage area.

I think the main thing would be eliminating extra STUFF that you don't

really need. The latest gadgets that turn out to be one use dust

collectors.

A smaller kitchen I had once I had a ceiling mount pot rack, that saved

having to put a lot of stuff in drawers.

ETA: Thought of something else. Is there a space nearby your

kitchen (hallway, breakfast nook etc.) where you could put a

piece of furniture to use for storage? I'm thinking re-purpose

a dresser or similar type, not a big china cabinet or sideboard

or something. A dresser could even be painted to compliment

kitchen and could hold dishes, flatware or linens.

I'll second that. Why do you need an electric can opener when a manual one is just fine? I and my wife have a small kitchen, about 50 sq ft total but it is always neat and tidy because we have a minimum of STUFF. Your average Russians kitchen is smaller than mine but they can create feasts in one of them, they don't have a lot of STUFF in it.

Hey, thanks for these great suggestions!

Valerie, I am definitely condensing all my stuff. There is much left over after the divorce that I just won't be using. It's just me in the new place and I don't do extravagant cooking, so "gadgets" will mostly get tossed out. Right around the corner from my kitchen is my utility room where the washer and dryer will be, and I'll be putting cabinets in there, too, so probably the things I use less often can be stored in there.

SnoozeAgain, I like that idea of open shelves. Also something to consider. I could add more of those on what little open wall space I do have.

Has anyone used those sealable bags that you flatten by sucking the air out of them with a vacuum hose? If so, do they work as well as the commercials say they do? My closet size will be going from gargantuan where I am now, to mid-sized in my new place, so I'll need to store my clothes that are out of season. Those bags look like a good idea, but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually tried them.

Thanks for the tips! :yh_peace
