After surviving Gemini 8, every day must have felt like a gift. He certainly did a lot with them.

When he set foot on the moon he did it for America, sure. But he also did it for all of Humanity. I was four when they made that flight. I remember the landing because my parents got me up specially to watch it. To be honest, I remember more about the being woken and taken downstairs that I do about the Moon landing, but I DO remember seeing Mr Armstrong bounce off the end of the ladder and onto the surface. Just. On an incredibly blurry picture much worse than the pictures we see now.

The very best of America.

Neil Armstrong was also part of a very distinct memory for me. I was 13, dad was on nights and mum let me stay up to watch the landing on the moon. Images and sounds that will stay with me forever and defined, at least for me, what made America great

I was in the Navy then, and had just got off duty. We all crowded the mess hall to watch the landing.

We were all really proud that a it was a Navy pilot that had the honor of making the first human footprints on the moon.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-sock, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," Armstrong once told a National Press Club gathering.

In the years that followed the flight of Apollo 11, Armstrong was asked again and again what it felt like to be the first man on the moon. In answering, he always shared the glory: "I was certainly aware that this was the culmination of the work of 300,000 to 400,000 people over a decade."

My Dad still has the TV we watched the landing on. Of

course it doesn't work any more, but my Mom and Dad

always thought it was such a "nice piece of furniture"

(console w/stereo, etc.) that they kept it. Kind of neat.

Hold on to your sanity. There will probably be a fresh wave of people claiming he never landed on the moon.

He was a brave man, to travel to the moon. I still love our astronauts.

Someone can always be faster, bigger, stronger but however many places mankind will visit over the next thousand years, he will always be the first. That's what he will be remembered for, for the rest of space exploration. FIRST !

If you're looking at the long view I suspect Gagarin's name and face will be the one in the history books.

I don't think so. Without detracting from Gagarins endeavour , Armstrong was the first to set foot on another astral body. In the next thousand years or so more feet will set foot on more planets. More footprints will be photographed and put up on the wall along side the iconic image of Armstrong's. Gagarin of course deserves his place along side all the pioneer astronauts/cosmonauts but I think history will prove Armstrong's longevity in the public's psyche

By the time any human steps onto a planet outside this solar system they'll both be infrequently noticed footnotes. Until then I reckon most spacers will be on orbiting stations or zipping around in Dan Dare mining space-trucks.

Personally, I'd prefer a police box

If I had a police box I'd lock you in it.
