Mon Duchess euthanised an hour ago...

Post by Oscar Namechange »

I have just recieved the news that my racehorse Mon Duchess had to be euthenised after her race at Southwell tonight following the 18.50 race..

I knew from watching her race that something was very wrong about a furlong In but I put It down to the unsuitable fibersand of the all weather course....

Regretably, after extensive examination post race to see If anything could be done, Mon Duchess, has been put to sleep. She suffered a fore and rear fracture of the knee. Philip knew something had gone amiss after a furlong.

She was put on strong pain killers straight away and the knee was strapped so as soon as the racecourse vets took over she wasn't In any pain but she could not be saved.

I am so sorry to hear that Oscar - you must be so hurt by such a tragic turn of events.

This is the second sudden death I heard of today. (((oscar))) sudden death is so hard on survivors. From what you describe, she was not in pain & was doped up so hopefully she felt little or no fear. To have your high hopes dashed this way is a terrible thing. Much love to you.

Awwww Thanks.... funny... my brother rang straight after the race as he watched her on TV and asked me If she was OK because to his trained eye, he believed there was something very wrong seconds Into the race....

Do you think the track surface caused the injury? I'm sorry for your loss, Oscar. What a shame.

Waiting on an Inquest but yeah.... My brother believes Southwell Is a surface that many horses don't take to including Amno my new addition. It rides very deep and many struggle and fail to get home

Sorry to hear this.

Thanks Lars, Flop and Lady J...

It's such a shame as she was only 4 years old and she did have promise. OK she would never have been a Frankel or Black Caviar but she gave us a huge amount of enjoyment and pride.

Thanks Theia and Wisey...

Haven't been able to stop thinking of her.

Horse racing Is a risky venture, we all know that when you go Into It.... just hoped and prayed It would never happen to mine.

You expect It more In jump racing but there are deaths on flat racing... many occur Inside the starting gates where they panic and rear up. Injuring themselves...

There Is every possibility Southwell race track Is to blame for not dampning down the course enough.... will learn more later.

Did you ever ride her yourself?

I used to go horseback riding as a teenager. Bareback is exhilarating. You feel like part of the horse.

While you can have as many stable visits as you like, It reckless to allow anyone to ride a racehorse other than those that they know and are used to. The training regime Is a recognised pattern to the horse In preparation for the particular distance they are expected to race In.... so no, I never got to ride her... Having said that... for a thoroughbred she was one very laid back filly who loved recieving guests especially those who came bearing gifts !!!! In the parade ring her coolness put some of the others to shame who reared up and bolted over all sorts of nonsense such as spectators opening an umbrella or peeling a banana,

When I do go riding, It tends to be something far less tempremental.

Bare back riding Is the best.... without underwear !!!!

Your underwear or the horses?

That sounds uncomfortably sexual which, in connection to animals, I can't say I'm interested in trying.

I have another lined up. A young colt.... he's running next week In a race at Scotland which Is what will be the decider for me..... He's not been doing too well but I myself think he has potential. He's more financial outlay than Duchess so I want to see how he performs next week.

It's funny kathy because I would never buy Into a horse based purely on looks nor would I ever put a bet on a horse out of sentiment... I go by form alone but I have to say that when he was offered to me, the minute I saw him, I fell for him...

On the left, Kauto Star and on the right my new addition Amno....

And we all know how much I adored Kauts :wah:

ok. I've bit my tongue and tried not to say anything. I even tried to turn this into a thread about people who love horses. Fail.

I think horse racing is sadistic and terribly cruel. I'm no longer sure whether they're better off being ridden with no panties on for pleasure or raced until they die. I am definitely sad about the horse dying. I have no sympathy to offer the owner.

Why shouldn't you say Koan ? After all, It's a forum... we're all different and we all have differrent views...I'm just sorry you don't recognise the British style of tongue In cheek banter.

Horse racing Is at times cruel. Of course It Is. But Is It Intentionally cruel that's the question? Do the horses suffer In their lives prior to their unexpected deaths?
