to wonder how different life may have been had my parents taken on the running of this place Welcome to The Godolphin Arms - The Godolphin Arms. Mind you, it was way before I was a even a twinkle in my Dad's eye :wah:.
We took Mum there today as it's in her hometown, where she was born and where she wishes to be scattered when the time comes.
As we sat in the dining room eating our way through our carvery, Mum and my brother reminisced about the times they stayed there, Mum and Dad were good friends with the people running it at the time and they stayed several times to run the place when the friends went on holidays. When Mum and Dad's friends decided to retire, my Dad was offered the tenancy, what a shame he couldn't take it.
It was a lot smaller back then and we were apparently sat in the landlords living area whilst eating today. Stunning views across to the mount, imagine sitting in your living room every day to that view!

Wasn't the hotel recently the subject of the TV prog 'Hotel Inspector' Betty?

You were presumably overrun with Godolphins several hundred years ago, breeding like rapacious rabbits and buying up whatever estates the monarch periodically confiscated for resale.

Very good reviews on Trip Advisor

It's a great place to eat too, they're doing something right with their staff. They bent over backwards for us. My brother and I arrived early with banners and balloons and they took them from us and decorated the area around our table. Me being a celiac didn't phase them at all, wheat free gravy was organised and they double checked which veg I could and couldn't have. First time I've eaten a roast out for a long time without having to bring my own gravy :wah:. The waitress was brilliant, she was even updating my Uncle on the score on the football. Every single member of staff was happy and cheerful and couldn't do enough to help, each time I had to navigate a set of six steps with the buggy they ran over and took over, carrying buggy and baby down over the steps for me, normally people just look on whilst you struggle.

Maybe so, not sure how long Godolphin Arms has been owned by St Aubyns. Might have to dig deeper to see if prior to that it had anything to do with the Godolphin's of Godolphin - Visitor information - National Trust.

Any minute now some bloody Godolphin's going to register and complain that I've libelled his lineage.

My guess is they're wanting to please the locals too, after all we're their bread and butter all through the quieter winter months, besides, we were a booking of 14, that's a lot of money on meals and wine at the end of the day.

I love the series 'The Hotel Inspector' because It really shows how deluded some of these hotel owners are. Pleasing the locals and attracting new customers Is actually very difficult. One Is usually sacrificed for the other.

And, of course, whilst we were there Mother reminisced about her three children. Brother was the one that didn't sleep, then grew into a toddler with wander lust and sent her into a frenzy a lot of times as he'd just wander off out the garden :wah: Sis was born with her feet turned in and Mum watched her go through many operations to correct this, broke her heart over the fact she had to wear special boots with braces for months, spent months in a high chair or buggy as she wasn't allowed to walk. And then there's me, I was the perfect baby, slept for hours, Mum could get the other two off to school before she'd come get me out of my cot for breakfast, quiet as a lamb I was. Then I became a teenager :wah: and caused her more grief than the other two put together according to her
I wasn't that bad!! :wah:

Lunchtime lol Mother can't take busy evenings anymore.
It was good and I hope Dad was looking down from somewhere, proud of us all no doubt but it was universally agreed I was a Daddy's girl. I was reminded today how I shared his Sunday roast with him, he'd have his when he got in from the pub, and even though I'd already polished off one dinner an hour or so earlier I'd always help him with his. Then we'd tuck into the Bournville and play cards, domino's or draughts, he used to let me win a lot too. My shoes were never cleaner or more polished than when I lived at home, I just deposited them under the coat racks and miraculously they'd be re-soled, re-heeled and polished :wah:
He would have loved running that place given the chance.
