The railroad tracks through our town (and beyond!) are being
removed and replaced in prep for a brand new train that will
be coming through in a couple of years.
The new ties are made of concrete. Somehow it makes me
sad to see that.

I have no idea what creosote is. Is that treated wood?
Speaking of old railroads, have you seen Hell on Wheels? It's about the building of the railroad heading west and the 'hero' is a Confederate officer that's looking for the Union men that killed his family while he was at war. It's pretty good and the lead guy is gooooooood looking.

Why sad?
Concrete sleepers are far more robust and reliable than wooden ones and can be laid far faster. Also, creosote has been banned over here for years as being environmentally damaging whereas the concrete is neutral. All in all I see the move to concrete as positive.

Somebody was just telling me about Hell On Wheels, I should try and get that,
my Dad worked for 40 some years on the railroad!
I don't know Bryn, guess it's just a little sentimentality coming out... my dad had
a huge stash of them at some property he sold years ago, and I just kept thinking
I hope the people made some terraces with it or something!

I've quite often seen wooden sleepers used to build terracing in gardens and very effective it looks too but I think the new design is just too effective for the railroads to ignore.
They recently relaid part of the line I use regularly and watching then drop a complete section of track in place in a single lift is impressive - the rails, sleepers and all the fittings prebuilt and ready to connect up.
