I'm so excited that tomorrow my early birthday gift from Mr O Is being delivered.

( No, that's not a hint)

It's something I've wanted for years.... a 4 ft long fish tank.

I don't want tropical fish because of my lifestyle and I just want freshwater fish...

I've looked on the net for various types of fish and where to buy them but the choice seems limited.... any Idea's Folks?

I would suggest piranhas, the bigger the better. You can feed them by hand you know and stroke them.

I really like the look of these but my husband says they are tropical fish and would need a heated tank.... boo

What is it about your lifestyle that bars tropical ?

I don't know much, but a half decent tank set up is the solution to either freshwater or tropical.

Oh sorry, I didn't realize you didn't want heated. You're probably stuck with goldfish but those frilly ones are very pretty.

But as far as I know, freshwater or tropical much the same pharting about......setting up, then they should be self supporting afterward.

I think algae grows faster in heated tanks. But that's part of the fun, you can get little guys in there that help keep the tank clean.

I've decided I will start with cold water fish and then research more Into tropical If I have the time... as I know bugger all about them..

Just this past month the Mrs.Dog decided to do the fish thingy.

She did her home work. Bought a 7 gallon tank, stuff for decorations. The testing stuff for water quality and what not.

She got a Siamese Fighting fish. I have to admit it was very pretty little guy. After a couple of days it wasn't acting right. Her tests showed it was on the high end of permissible ammonia. Fish died.

She researched the heck out of the problem. Doing whatever to no let that happen again.

I mentioned you and you don't want tropical and she though you were going for salt water fish as most every other is tropical.

If you can get some pretty goldfish, I'd go with that. I had some for

a while, and they were super easy, and a lot of fun.

Tude, the ammonia thing is quite the common problem with setting up

a new tank. Generally it's advisable to set one up for a week/ten days

before actually introducing any fish.

Thanks for this Diane.... Mr O and I watched It last night and It was very helpful especially regarding what fish not to put with others...

I managed to pop In to an Aquatic centre today and looked at some fish and I bought a castle for them to swim round.... yeah, I know.. :wah:

I've picked out some fish and they are being collected next week... There's one I'm calling Snooze :wah: One called Snowfire and a real grumpy looking git I'm calling Mike :sneaky::sneaky::yh_rotfl

I'll call one Panto Andy as well.

Well what do you know. I went to the Aquatics centre today and what did I find on sale ? Piranhas .... I thought you were joking...
