Legalized same sex marriages
Canada has allowed same sex marriages to be performed in some areas since 2003 and is now legalized is most of the country. :-4 I was curious to know if American same sex couples legally marry in Canada, when you get back "home" does it make any difference?? :-5 Are you entitled to put your new spouse on your company benefit plan? Does the U.S. Government recognize your marriage? Does it vary from state to state? Just curious as a Canadian citizen ~ Princess

Legalized same sex marriages
Hello and welcome. Nothing like jumping in with both feet on your first post. :-6
I'm pretty sure that currently a marriage in one state is recognized in the other 49. I know that my own marriage license is Japanese (God, I hope it's a marriage license!) and is recognized in all 50 states. I would think that a valid Canadian marriage license would have to be recognized. Although, isn't polygamy illegal whether it's sanctioned by another gov't or not?
Now, get over to the introductions forum and make a proper introduction, young lady! You are a lady, right? I mean, you're not a young queen, are you?

Legalized same sex marriages
Same sex marriages have been legalised in Spain this year....one little problem is, anyone from another country must get a marriage licence issued from their own country first.

I don't think there's actually an answer to that yet, which is why they're trying to change the constitution, like flopstock said. Until then I can't imagine they'd be able to decline benefits to a same sex couple, as long as the certificate was valid. I wonder if this is going to speed up the voting on this issue for the U.S.

As a Canadian, I'm glad that the Canadian Government changed the laws and stepped up to the plate recognizing that there are many gay and lesbian families that had difficulties obtaining basic benefits that us heterosexuals take for granted. ie. employer medical benefits for their partners.
I think that it's so wrong that heterosexual common-law couples (including children from PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIPS) receive employer medical benefits, but not homosexual couples. That's just DUMB!!
How does the rest of the world feel about Canada changes our laws to allow legalized SSM?

I think it's a step in the wrong direction.
It's time the government get out of the relationship/reproduction discussion altogether. Treat each individual as single individuals. No more monetary incentives to populate the earth via tax breaks or otherwise. If people can't afford children they shouldn't have them.
In anticipation of the primary argument: Any new law has grandfather clauses.
