A heartwarming story about a man and his squirrel

Post by Snooz »

From an email:

Soldiers in Belarus found a little squirrel and brought it to the Warrant Officer.

The squirrel was very weak and about to die, so the officer took care of it, fed like a human baby every 4 hours.

3 months ago the guy left the army and now works as a taxi driver - and the squirrel is always in his pocket no matter where he goes!

I'm disappointed, I thought this series of photos would get a better reception.

I think the problem is that too many times these stories have been found to be false.

False or not, I don't have a problem with they guy saving the squirrel but I do have a problem with the squirrel living a 'human' kind of life. He should have been handed over to a place that would encourage him to live a more natural life as a squirrel.

I love those ears. :D

We have a pet squirrel. I don't think she knows she's a pet, though, since she lives in a nest somewhere else. I built her a little shelf over the edge of the deck and attached a bowl that she eats breakfast from a few times every week.

The accuracy of the text occurred to me as well but it was short, didn't have any incredible claims and the photos seemed to back it up to some extent. And the argument about the squirrel having a more natural life can apply to any pet. He saved the squirrel's life... it would have died otherwise. He seems to love it and take good care of it and since the alternative would be a dead squirrel, I don't see a single thing wrong with it.

The squaddie and the squirrel: Soft-hearted soldier who nursed dying baby creature back to health by feeding it every four hours | Mail Online

The animal would have died If he had not of reacted as quick as he did. Once any animal Is nursed back from the brink of death, It's very difficult to re-Introduce them back Into the wild especially If the animal Is very young. Chances are the squirrel would not survive alone If he released It now.

In Belarus and farther east there are no laws against owning exotic animals that are enforced. It is not very unusual for people to have foxes as family pets in rural areas and small towns. I once walked past a car that had a lynx waiting in the front seat like a dog. I have seen quite a few people with orphaned squirrels. I guess it makes a good story and I think the squirrel is actually better off for now, had he not been picked up the grutches or rooks would have had him. The squirrel is the common type found all over that part of the world.
