Why is my computer doing this on this site only..

Post by Marie5656 »

I have noticed this since I have been back from my self imposed exile. When I click on the green "reply to thread" button, all I get is the "waiting" cursor..the circle that goes round and round. The reply box does not open. But if I go to the bottom of the post itself and hit the black reply with the little arrow, a reply box opens right up for me.

BUT WAIT..there's more. When I hit "post reply" again it waits and waits, until I go to the refresh button at the top of my screen. Then my reply will have posted.

I have just cleared my History and Cache and still the same issue.

Mine does too and has for a little bit now. I have to doubleclick it and it takes me right to the advanced screen:thinking:

Does it happen anywhere else? Other forums?

The only common denominator I can immediately see is that both Marie and floppy are using Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 9. If either of you feel like switching the site to engage Compatibility View you could see if there's a difference, at the moment neither of you is using it on ForumGarden.

I have Windows 7 somewhere on this machine, I'll upgrade to Internet Explorer 9 and try to repeat your finding.

I just switched to Google Chrome. Hit reply to thread green button with no delay. Let me hit the post quick reply button and see what happens

edit to add: also no delay on using post quick reply. Guess I may have to visit through Chrome.

FG doesn't like it when I talk like that.

Were I a sufficiently adept analyst programmer to have designed and coded IE9 I'd feel quite pleased with myself. The closest I got was a nasty little harvesting spider which would have resulted in a court case had I handed it over. Someone spent a year in jail not long after and I suspect it was my end user.

This didn't make a bit of sense to me when I opened it on IE. Then opened it in Chrome and decided it was the poster that was confusing not the browser or browsee.

OK, do not like having to use Chrome, but I guess I will so this issue does not drive me completly and totally bonkers. I am loving getting reaquainted here and want it to be as smooth as possible.

I was a Firefox fan for years, and the first time I used Chrome, I didn't really like it.

Now, though, I have become so accustomed to Chrome, I don't really like any of the others.

Some sites do seem to work best on particular browsers.

Interesting

I just switched to IE9 and tried this forum.

Same symptoms described in the OP.

Possibly some add-on required?

Dunno.

The answer, I suspect, is to bring the vBulletin release up to date. I tried a while back and gave the site a 30 hour outage before reverting, but it has to be done.

Why, out of interest, is this not seen as a defect of IE9 instead of the site?

That was kinda my thinking, all along.

There is probably some setting default in IE9, that if changed, would fix it.

IE8 on Win7 or WinXP does not seem to exhibit the problem behavior.

Nor does FireFox, Opera, or Chrome.

Selecting Compatibility Mode for the site in IE9, I thought I'd said. They made Compatibility Mode for IE9 because the damn thing screws up so many User Experiences.

Download Chrome?

Seriously, Searching google for info on this brings up a lot of complaints, but very few answers. A lot of people seem to have similar problems on a lot of different BB's but there seem to be a lot more that are not, on the same boards, and the vBulletin version seems to not matter much.

One trend seems to suggest it is a problem with the 64-bit version of IE9, even.

I can play around with the settings some, and see what I can find out, but it won't be a quick fix.

I do suggest trying firefox or Chrome.

I just did that....but it didn't help.

And since yesterday, when I want to go to Google Chrome (I have installed it) the website below pops up:

Yahoo! Search - Web Search

In the upper right corner of the Chrome browser is a little box with 3 horizontal lines.

If you hover the mouse over it it will say "Customize and control Google Chrome"

Click on that, and from the menu that drops from there, click settings.

About the fourth option down will be "Search"

You can set the search engine you want.

Also, there is an option for setting you home page.

You can also import your bookmarks from Internet Exploder, though it takes a little bit of "nudging" to make it work cleanly.

I did do all that. I have an account and signed in first. Google is my home page on that tab, but this keeps popping up first.

Yahoo! Search - Web Search

I don't want yahoo. genio.com and I don't know how I got it. I first noticed it yesterday after I contacted ForumGarden about my attachement problems, by the way. A thread, THIS thread, showed up on that yahoo.genio home page that first time as well. ???

I have the google chrome icon on my toolbar below my screen. Before yesterday, I clicked on it and Google would appear right off.

Okay, I just deleted yahoo.genio from my programs FAQ | Genieo - A newspaper styled homepage. Maybe I need to reboot.

I rebooted, but yahoo.genio is still initially showing up in my browser bar at the top of my Google page. I have to click on the home tab to get to google. Still..a two step process.

As to the OP, my point is that if I can open attachments and add a video on another webpage, why I can I no longer do it successfully here at FG?

Something happened around September 8th that changed my FG capabilties. Now it's October 22nd, and I'm still having the same problems.

I'm not convinced that changing from Internet Explorer is the answer. I still believe the problem is here. Perhaps with my account.

Well, I never even heard of that Genieo thing, and have no idea what to do about it. I know that it was not Google Chrome that installed genieo. But apparently a lot of people are up in arms over that.

I found this:

FAQ | Genieo - A newspaper styled homepage

It may have been from an update to Java. Oracle (The owner of Java) always wants to "give" you something extra when you install a Java update, and you have to uncheck the little box that says to install whatever they want to give you, or it installs, automatically.

So I am going to play around with the different browsers and see what I can find. It might take a few days, though.

As to you browser problem, I dunno.

I see exactly what you described when I use IE9 on my Win 7 PC.

I am using Chrome on same PC, now, and don't have a problem.

One of my lads has a Windows 7 computer, I'll take my password next time I visit him and log onto the site and see what difference the Compatibility Mode has in Internet Explorer, then I'll report back. What I already know is that there's no setting in use on the administrator controls which degrades the site's performance for a specified user.

Right, I have a suggestion to be chewed over by any of the members who have an opinion.

Rather than carry on up the vBulletin ladder, which is the software that's driven the site for the last seven years, I'd quite like to transport the users and the database into a Drupal environment.

I think that's the way to go, I'm prepared to approximate the current aesthetics, not to lose any threads and to keep as much of the rest as I can. I'll also commit to leaving the existing site read-only but online for a couple of years for anyone who wants to ferret out oddments I've not succeeded in transporting across. I'll also commit to leaving the games in place.

It's a decision for the site owner eventually, but a few comments here at this stage will be helpful. And by all means offer alternative systems to migrate to.

Does Drupal have sharing available on posts? I think that would be a nice enhancement that could build our user base by pulling folks this way rather then just the one way of folks posting stuff they found on facebook.

What would sharing available on posts look like? I'm not sure I've ever seen a website that did something I'd use those words for. If you can point me to an example I'll get the idea.

As for the story, how can the justice system hold or have held anyone responsible other than the parents? And why on earth has Paula been suspended from her job?

Drupal does appear to have a migration route, that's the first question answered.

vBulletin Roles Migration with vbulletin_roles.inc | drupal.org

Migrating vBulletin Forum Structure with vbulletin_forum.inc | drupal.org

Migrating vBulletin Users with vbulletin_users.inc | drupal.org

Migrating vBulletin Threads with vbulletin_forum.inc | drupal.org

etc

What I can see is 360 comments PICf-recommend 569 PICbird-tweet 37 PLUSshare 538 Print and none of those, as far as I can tell, put anything on my Facebook Wall. I'm quite simply inexperienced, I have no idea what they're for but the end result is that I still don't know which button you're guiding me to.

Your idea is that ForumGarden should try to persuade lots of news outlets to one by one add a FG-icon which will automatically post their story into a ForumGarden thread if a ForumGarden member presses the button on the news outlet website?

I am, I suspect, icon-blind. Unless I find documentation on what the function of a given icon is, or I blindly press it and try to work out the consequence, I have no idea at all what they're for unless there's a mouseover explanation in adequate English. What's more, I have no idea at all how anyone else works it out any differently.

No dear.

If there is a fun or interesting thread running here, we could share it with friends and family on facebook or twitter.

If someone posts a thread about an interesting story that gets a conversation going here, we could then share/recommend that conversation on facebook and twitter and perhaps others(new folks) would join in that conversation.
I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.
