This kind of headline has been bandied about in much of the Press for some time. But I would really like someone to explain to me how "Winning the War against Al Queda" is even possible short of killing every radical fundamentalist Islamic terrorist on the face of the earth. Kill one leader and another pops up. They don't fear death, in fact, some look forward to it. Isn't this something that the rest of the world will have to live with for a long time, if not forever? Aren't the headlines merely Blowin Smoke in the face of reality?

Even that would not work. Our "radical fundamentalist Islamic terrorist" is someone else's "Freedom Fighter" and killing them all would generate ten times the number. You don't kill the Hydra just by cutting the heads off.

There may very well be a "Freedom Fighter" surface at some time down the road that perpetrates international terrorism and violence, but he's not visible at this time.

That is exactly how the "insurgency" in Afghanistan and Iraq are seen in large swathes of the world.
Whereas America was seen as the victim immediately after 9/11 that rapidly changed after the invasion of Afghanistan and totally changed after the invasion of Iraq. With every drone strike into a country with which you are not at war, another dozen converts join Al Queda.
That is exactly how the "insurgency" in Afghanistan and Iraq are seen in large swathes of the world.

If a group actually exists, would destroying it, kill the idea, the reason behind it ?
It's many things.
Al Qaida to western politicians, war mongers and media types is a label used to focus the attention of the unwashed masses of the western world. Al Qaida is the ENEMY, Al Qaida is WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING. Al Qaida is what is TRYING TO KILL YOU. It's a point for you to focus on when you start to think too much, it creates fear which kills rational thought.
Physically Al Q is a loose organization created by Osama Bin Laden and friends (America included) in the late 1980s. Small groups of troublemakers use it as a point to focus on and a reason for doing what they do. Ideologically their purpose is to bring about a global Jihad and bring the virtues of Sharia law to humanity. In reality it is simply an idea, they're the Arab idea of Robinhood and his merry men. It gives the downtrodden masses of the Arab world something to rally around.
You can kill people by the million but you can't kill ideas. The people of the ME will never forget what the west has done in the last 2 decades in Iraq and Afghanistan. This "War On Terror" will never cease.
