Atheists prefer video games over board games

Post by Ahso! »

This is an interesting article based on experiment. The results are intriguing.

Chris Burris, at St. Jerome’s University in Canada, has been quizzing students at “a southwestern Ontario university about their interests in video games and board games. He’s found that atheists were more likely to prefer video games, and his hypothesis as to why this should be is really rather interesting.

So, along with Elyse Redden at the University of Guelph, here’s what they did. They asked 228 students to complete an online survey that asked, among other things, about their liking for four different kinds of video games (strategy, role-play, a narrative [i.e., a story or world to discover], and simulated violence) and the same types of board games.

Doesn't say what type of board games. I'd have thought religious people like board games where there are rules to be followed and you are told exactly how to play. A survey on how both types view chess might be more interesting.

A lot of churches view fantasy as glorifying paganism so which particular sect might also be interesting. as would which group best understands role playing games are fantasy and not real. Or maybe not

Interesting site. I think you're probably correct about the "rules" part of board games, but i also find merit in the face-to-face sociability that board games offer. Though it should be said that not other gamers all like to be alone - they often times join clubs where they get together to either play with others over the internet or among themselves.

What I find striking is that many/some religious people start out with the question is it OK for me to look/read/play this while most people the question is more let's have a look and see if it is interesting or fun to play/read etc etc. More ready to make up their own minds about things - maybe that's the biggest difference between religious and non religious.

Perhaps a wider network of friends and acquaintances than board gamers? gives you something in common to talk about in a social setting. It's like TV when I was a kid much of the next day conversation was about what had been on those kids whose parents didn't let them watch tended to be a bit isolated nowadays if you know nothing about games or computers a large chunk of conversation is closed down to you. Good or bad thing who knows.
