Ignorant American question

Post by Snooz »

I'm watching Downton Abbey and Lady Edith just took the train to London. The man she was talking to asked if she'd be heading back to Yorkshire that afternoon, etc...

Aren't you Brits kind of er... biased about people that live anywhere north of London? I was surprised that they based this posh, aristocratic family in Yorkshire considering some of the rude comments I've read here at FG about the place.

And never mind the Scots, they're all woad-painted savages.

All the Brits I know are exceptionally multicultural and embrace diversity regardless of the moral belief, religious practice, or code of ethics. In fact, many feel Muslims should be allowed full latitude in the practice of Sharia law in the UK.

Of course these are all soldiers (Infantry and superfriends), but they may be somewhat representative of the group?

Do all the Brits you know live in Amish country where you used to jog the gravel tracks and everyone is full of good cheer?

No, most were either at their regiments when I have visited, in Morocco, or in the Middle East tidying up a bit.

Good folks and a common bond. Enjoyable company and reliable professionals.

What is a 'superfriend' ?

I agree with what you said about being multicultural and embracing diversity.

Aristocrats living on their country estates also used to have a house in london where they would go for the "season". Think the Hamptons and the american elite keeping houses there it's the same kind of thing.

There is a north south divide, people in the south east of england - the home counties -, tend to think they live in paradise and Londoners don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to live there. Their idea of north is watford and they panic at the site of countryside and no street lights.

people in the north know better but keep quiet about it so the pillocks stay down there.

To me yorkshire is down south but they think they are in the north while people in Inverness think Edinburgh is down south. In edinburgh going up north means you are going heading for the highlands.

When I was in London area a while back, several of the guys I was working with were from Leeds and Manchester. There was a distinct animosity towards them coming from the other guys who were from Berkshire and Hampshire.

The accents were part of it. I found the northerner a bit harder to follow, at times.

On the other hand, on another trip, this time to York, the locals there tended to treat the guys from the south with some disdain.

I never realized how many different accents could be heard on such a small land mass.

Firstly, its a two way thing. We aint all posh, living in leafy suburbs and tree lined avenues and we're not all chirpy cockneys doin the Lambeth walk......more stereotyping. Secondly, its no more serious than a Yorkshire - Lancashire divide (Remember, they had a big war between themselves a few years ago called the war of the roses ) and they get on ok with a little bit of banter

Its friendly banter, just as it is between us Sassenachs and them blethering bampots north of the border. Of course we each have our nutters who like to take it further but neither is any worse than the other

Its all a lot abart nuffing

I never realized how many different accents could be heard on such a small land mass. I was born on the South Coast. Brighton and grew up In The Sussex Downs In the South yet I have to say that even I find quite a difference with people In the North. I have always found them friendlier and life more laid back. I had an Aunt In Lancashire and some of my happiest times were spent there In Bolton.

Talking of accents I have lived In the West Country now for 14 years and not a week goes by where someone will say to me ' You're not from these parts are you? Then I get called a Londoner and have to point out that London Is 50 miles from my Brighton accent... so yes, accents here really are that diverse.

This one of my pet theories, about everybody needing to belong, and all the different 'clubs' we belong to dring our lives.

London has a north south divide, towns have posh areas, families have different factions.

It's all to do with 'belonging' and feeling superior, or in it together with our other lesser equals
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth
