We are in a sad state of affairs. Why so much hate?

Yeah, I agree. It's unfathomable why there's so much anger and hate toward Muslims, gays and independent-minded people (women in particular) from Christians that would cause some people to react in an unkind fashion.

From your article:

You can find, among hundreds of comments on USA TODAY's news story on Matthew's death, comments such as the Cincinnati poster who says, "Either there is no God, or God doesn't listen to Rick Warren, despite all the money Rick has made off of selling false hope to desperate people." In another comment, the same poster counsels Warren to "abandon primitive superstitions and accept the universe for what it is — a place that is utterly indifferent to us."

I find both of these comments less distasteful in wording and timing than what a Christian's might be to an unbeliever who suffers a similar loss, which might go something like: "perhaps this will cause so-n-so to seek God".

Go figure, huh HW!

So many, not all irreligious people fall into the holier-than-thou camp.

There are people and concepts I hate, but at least I try to put a reason behind my moral outrage. Not just to be mean.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.
