I had a rather bizzarre experience yesterday.
I have spent many years In the company of Turkish friends but we speak to each other only In English. They chat amongst themselves In the background In Turkish.
Yesterday I was at a market with my beloved and we got talking to a young man and I asked him If he was Turkish to which he said, Yes.
Then, despite my only listening to Turkish with my friends, I begin to speak and carry on a conversation in Turkish with this young man. Not word perfect or fluent but he understood me...
I walked away thinking how on earth did I do that? I have only ever listened to people speaking In Turkish and not spoken with them before In Turkish.
How does that work exactly?
has anyone else experienced similar ?

You seem to be able to soak up languages and learn by listening like a small child would do. I'm not really good at languages although I used to be able to think in Spanish & now can only for simple stuff. It's a gift Oscar.

It's called full immersion, I think. Learning a language by being saturated by it. Never worked for me, though. I know a little spanish, after a lifetime of working with them, but I'm nowhere near carrying on a conversation. You must be gifted, oscar!

I wondered If It was subliminal. Weather you actually take In something that you hear but pay no attention to.
